"Please, I'm begging you, stop.""But it's my favorite song!" Emery whines.
"My ears are bleeding!" Her brother responds.
"What, I'm a great singer! Aren't I Vi?"
"Uhh.."
"She's hesitating- there's your answer."
"Whatever. I'll stop."
This is what a regular school morning looks like. Eli driving, Em sitting shotgun, and me in the back seat listening to them arguing. Always fun.
When we get to school, everyone seems to be buzzing about something.
"What's going on?" Eli asks Dustin when he walks up to us. He writes for the school paper, so if anyone knows the facts, it's him.
"New kid, moved here from somewhere in England, supposed to be our new track superstar."
"What year?" Emery asks, eyes sparkling. She's got a thing for English accents.
"He's a senior with us."
"Nice!" She giggles and I roll my eyes.
I push off the locker I was leaning against. "Well, I'm gonna be late for trig, so I better go."
"Have fun." Eli smirks at me, knowing just how much I hate trig.
I rush to class and take my seat right as Mr. Brix walks in. He's an extremely tall man in his mid-forties, he has blonde hair, brown eyes, and a monotonous voice that just drones on and on.
"Put away your textbooks and take out a clean sheet of paper for a quiz."
I groan it's gonna be a great day.
-
"Hey, did you two hear Blair and Lilli were fighting?" Eli sits down at the lunch table where Emery and I already were. He sits a little to close to me, and the musky scent of his cologne makes my heart race.
Blair was the queen bee of the school. She was always flanked on both sides by Lilli and Samantha. Her goal in life was to make everyone miserable-and, also, get Eli's attention. Her stepbrother, Kaiden, was the captain of the soccer team, he was a lot kinder than his step sister.
"I heard they were fighting, do you know why?" I grab a fry off Eli's tray and pop it in my mouth.
He glares at me. "Stop taking my food. Apparently, Lilli and Kaiden want to get together, but Blair told Lilli if that happened she was off the cheer team." He rolls his eyes.
"I don't see the big deal, Blair's just looking out for her best friend and brother..."
"That's what you think that is?" Eli glares at his sister, his jaw ticking. "You think it's perfectly okay for someone to dictate their friend and sibling's love life?" He snaps.
"She's doing what she think's is best for her best friend and brother, looking out for both of them." Emery glares back; then her eyes snap to me. "Don't you think Vi?"
"Nope." I take a huge bite of my sandwich and watch as Eli smirks and Emery's eyes widen as she frowns. "Blair doesn't have a single kind bone in her body; she's not capable of caring. So, no, I don't think she's looking out for Kaiden or Lilli. Anyone else though, I'm sure would have a good reason."
The triumphant spark in Eli's eyes fades, and Emery takes over the smirk he lost.
"Guys," Dustin slides into his seat at the table. "This-" He nods toward a guy I've never seen before. "Is Ezra Bowie. He's a transfer student from England."
"Hello." Ezra's deep voice, rumbles. His accent causes a slight shiver to run through Emery. She's such a dork. Maybe it's the blonde hair too.
"Hi." She replies in a giddy voice. "I'm Emery, and this is my brother Elias." Eli nods at him.
"And I'm Violet." I wave before sneakily reaching for another one of Eli's fries.
"Violet! Stop!"
Ignoring Eli, I grab another fry.
"That's it!" He snatches my sandwich from the tray and takes a monstrous bite from it.
"Eli!!!" He obnoxiously chews the bite of my burger. How does he make sloppy eating look hot?
"So how long have you two been dating?" Ezra breaks us from our bubble.
"Oh, we're not dating." Eli laughs, and I give a tightlipped smile, shaking my head.
Is the idea of dating me so terrible?
Yes, Violet, the idea of dating you is laugh worthy. My subconscious rolls her eyes at me.
"Are you going to sit down?" Em asks, squishing closer to me, making room for Ezra next to her.
"Oh, yes." Ezra must suddenly realize he's still standing. He takes a seat next to Emery, and she bites her lip, grinning. They catch each other's eyes.
"So, where in England are you from?" I ask him, breaking the weird staring contest Ezra and my best friend have fallen into.
"Why do you care?" Eli's brows furrow.
"I was trying to make conversation." Gee, who pissed on his French fries.
"I'm from Ashford," Ezra says, glancing at Em. "It's a little over an hour east of London."
"Why did you move here?" I ask genuinely curious, and I see Eli roll his eyes.
"My dad came here for work, so my mom, little brother, and I packed up and came too."
"Oh, that's cool." Emery bobs her head before the table falls into silence.
This girl never stops talking and now just because she likes the guy's accent she can't form a full sentence?
"So you run track right?"
"Yes, uhh." He pauses when Dustin takes out his notebook.
"He writes for the school paper." Emery explains to our confused friend, and just like that, they fall into easy conversation.
When the bell rings, Eli is the first to leave the table, quickly storming away.
"What's his problem?"
"Who knows." His twin sighs.
-
What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you? And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up, and you're okay?
"Ahhh!" I scream, flailing my arms around when a hand wraps around my bicep, my earbuds falling out in the process.
"It's just me!" Eli's voice rasps as his hot breath fans my ear.
"My god Eli!" I shriek. "You can't do that!"
"Sorry." He chuckles. "I didn't mean to scare you." His face suddenly turns serious. "We need to talk about you flirting with Ezra. "
What I'm sure is an incredibly unattractive snort, leaves my mouth. "What?" He's joking, right?
"You know what I'm talking about Vi." He sighs, dragging his fingers through his dark hair. "You know my sister has a thing for the British guys, and now one shows up at school, but you start talking his ear off."
"I wasn't- I didn't- I was trying..." I pause trying to get my composure before I scream at him. "Nevermind."
"Violet I wasn't trying to offend you. I was just..." He struggles to word his sentence.
"Just jumping to conclusions and being an ass?" I finish for him, checking his shoulder as I walk away.
