Katie’s P.O.V.
What…happened?
Everything hurts. It feels like I was just run over by a bus.
No wait, not a bus… I remember, just a car.
I try to move and a jolt of pain shoots up my left side. A groan escapes my lips. Where am I?
I try to open my eyes but the world is so bright, I can’t see a thing. After a couple blinks, it all starts to come into focus, and I’m able to make out the bright blue sky spotted with puffy white clouds, and a beautiful boy leaning over me with a concerned look on his face.
Am I in heaven? I wonder.
No, if I was dead, I wouldn’t be in so much pain. I decide.
“She’s waking up!” a chorus of voices exclaim, and four other gorgeous faces move into my vision.
“Hi” the first boy I saw says. “I’m Liam.” Like I don’t know who you are, your face is plastered across my bedroom walls. “Are you alright?”
“I’m Kati-“ I start to say when…
“Katie? Where did she go? Katie?! OH MY GOD KATIE WHAT HAPPENED??” My three best friends Emma, Emmie and Leah rush over to where I’m lying from across the street. They push the five boys out of their way to get close to me, without realizing who they are.
“What happened?” Emmie says frantically.
“What did you do to her?” Leah snarls, turning on the boys. “What did you- ohmygosh. You’re… oh wow.”
Emmie and Emma, hearing the surprise in Leah’s voice, turn to look at the five boys that sit around me. Their jaws drop and eyes widen in awe.
“You’re One Direction” they all say at once.
If I weren’t in so much pain, I probably would’ve freaked out with them, but as it is, I can barely move without crying out.
“Umm… guys? I’m… I’m really sorry… to interrupt but… but I can’t move.” I struggle to say. Even the effort of getting those words out causes darkness to cloud my vision and the world around me to spin. I let out a gasp.
“Oh shit, right I’m so sorry Katie!” says Emmie.
“Is there anything we can do to help?” asks Emma. “Do you think you can manage to sit up?”
“Um, I guess I can try?” I reply.
I gather every ounce of strength in my body and put it into trying to sit up, but half way up my muscles give out and I start to fall again. Leah instinctively reaches out to catch me but Liam gets there first, wrapping his arm around my shoulders to support me as I cave into my left side.
“Ahh,” I gasp, clutching at my ribs.
“Oh dear, don’t worry Katie, the ambulance should be here any minute!” Liam reassures me.
“Ambulance?? No no, I’m fine, really!” Trying to prove my point I sit up a little straighter and immediately collapse back into Liam’s chest as blackness dots my vision and pain races across my ribs.
“No you’re not fine.” Liam argues. “You just got hit by a car, you are going to the hospital, no buts.”
“He’s right,” adds Emma “Even if you are ok, you should at least get checked out, you know, just to make sure.”
Just as she says this, a siren sounds in the distance, getting louder and closer by the second. It rushes around the corner and comes to a stop 10 feet away from where we sit. Two paramedics jump out, one opens the back of the ambulance to get equipment out, the other jogs towards us, firing questions at me: what’s my name, where I’m from, what exactly happened, what hurts, etc.
I must look overwhelmed because Leah and Zayn stand up to talk to him, Leah because she knows me best, and Zayn because he saw it happen.
The other paramedic walks over “Do you think you can walk to the truck or should I get a stretcher?”
“No, it’s fine, I can walk.”
“Are you sure?” Liam asks.
“Yes.” I say rather forcefully. I can’t look weak. The last thing I want is people pitying me.
I start to get to my feet and Liam reaches an arm out to steady me but I brush it off. “I’m fine.” I assure him.
Obviously I’m not because the second I’m on my feet, everything starts to spin and my head starts to pound. My legs give out and everything goes black. The last thing I’m aware of as the world fades to black is Liam’s arms catching me around the waist just before I hit the ground.
I wake up briefly in the ambulance. I’m lying on what I guess is a stretcher, with an IV stuck in my arm. I look up to see Liam sitting next to me, gently wiping the blood of my cheek with the hem of his t-shirt.
“How are you feeling?” he asks.
“Great.” I respond, and I am. The boy of my dreams is sitting beside me.
I smile slightly and slip back into unconsciousness.
