The Jett kid rushed through the doors two minutes late. He'd obviously been messing about with his group of friends. The only available seat was next to me and right now I didn't need that. I was being made fun of on my first day, it was just great, and now a weird boy from some fancy primary school was going to try to be my new friend when he'd already scared the living hell out of me.
"Sit down please Jett Matthews, you're on a warning."
Jett sat down next to me and I did my best to not provoke a conversation, but he was too insistent. He kept nudging my arm and looking at me with this weird expression on his face like he was remembering some kind of past memory. I hated it.
"What do you want?" I said after twenty minutes of being stared at and being rudely interrupted.
"Skylar, do you seriously not remember me at all?" He said, looking sincerely at me. Remember what? You breathing down my earhole like some creepy rapist? Yeah, it's as clear as day.
"What do you mean?"
"We went to primary together and we did rhythm time and had sleepovers and everything, we were best friends Sky, you don't remember any of that?"
I looked at him carefully, he sounded deadly serious and it was kind of scaring me. This wasn't a prank, this was real, deadly real. I then tried to think back. I had moved primary two years prior to moving to secondary school, but I would have remembered-
Oh my god of course
Jett
Who else in my life would I meet with the name Jett? Why was I so stupid?
I looked up to make sure it was him. If it was he'd lost so much weight he was hard to recognize. But his blue eyes, I'd recognize them anywhere.
"Jesus Christ Jett, how much weight did you lose?"
He stared at me, realizing what Id said and then gave me the fattest hug I'd ever had. I'd not had a Jett hug for almost six years and now that was coming to an end. It really was him. I never thought I'd see him again after his parents broke up but here he was. It was magical.
"Mister Matthews please be quiet," came a deep voice from across the classroom. It was annoying, he wouldn't understand but Jett didn't even care. He composed himself and pretended to open the textbook in front of him. He winked at me, smiling. It was fate. I knew it was fate. I did the same, trying not to piss off our form tutor on the first day, I didn't want to give a bad impression.
The last time I'd seen Jett was at the Mabel Hill swimming pool. I remember waving goodbye to him, not knowing it would be the last time for six years. His mum and dad divorced a month after, making him move over ten miles away. After that, I gradually forgot about him, replacing my memories with new ones, but now the older ones were beginning to resurface again, like bodies being dug from a grave.
I looked up at the power cord presentation in front of me, going through the school rules. Pretty basic, they allowed phones at break time and lunch, just like pretty much every other school. As the teacher was rambling on I began to actually realize how much weight Jett had lost. His face was square and defined, his arms more toned and muscular, he looked really attractive, which I never thought I would say about someone who was my best friend. Hi pushed his hair behind his ear on one side of his face and looked at me, smiling. I smiled back, my face going hot.
Why was I blushing?
Jesus, I needed to pull myself together. Only half an hour ago I wanted this human out of my life and suddenly I'm being all weird. Stop Skylar, you haven't seen him in ages, that's why you're just happy to see him.
Yeah happy to see him.
Just happy.
