chapter three.
busy mornings.

Marlowe walked out of the  bathroom with a towel wrapped around her body. She walked into the room that she was sharing with her brother until they could figure out where their mother was. They couldn't just leave the seventeen year old to take care of a thirteen year old. Nathan saw her walk into the bedroom from where he sat on the bed and stood up, patting Marlowe on the shoulder, before leaving and heading to the kitchen to eat with their aunt. She grabbed one of hair ties off of her wrist and tied her hair up into a ponytail before going to the dresser where she began rummaging through the drawers to find an outfit. Both Nathan and Marlowe had plenty of clothes over from the times they had stayed over before.

After finding a sweater with slightly tattered ends and a pair of jeans, she decided that was the outfit for the day before she got dressed and went down the stairs to eat breakfast. She was met with the sight of her aunt running around and grabbing things while Nathan tried to calm her down. She left out a soft sigh and walked towards her aunt, who was holding a plate and each hand while balancing syrup in the crook of her elbow, she grabbed the plates and syrup from her placing them on the table. Diane Jenkins' hair was an absolute mess and Marlowe took notice of it.

"I'm so sorry guys. Everything is just so last minute and I'm worried about your mother-," their aunt rushed out before she could continue Marlowe shushed her telling her that it was fine. The older woman nodded before looking at her watch and groaning, "I'm so going to be late to work."

"Go ahead and get ready for work, aunt Diane, Nate and I can take care of ourselves," Marlowe reassured her aunt slightly pushing her towards her bedroom door without putting to much pressure.

"Are you sure you guys don't need a ride? I can drop you off before I go into -."

"We're fine. Go get ready," Marlowe insisted once again with a teasing smile causing her aunt to nod and kiss her cheek before going into her bedroom to get ready.

Marlowe set down two plates and handed her brother silverware while placing hers by her plate. She grabbed the eggs from the skillet along with bacon before going to make pancakes. Her brother sat there watching her make breakfast until she was finished and she set down to pancakes on each plate.

"I hope you enjoy it," Nathan spoke up, talking about the eggs and bacon, "I made them myself," he continued with a goofy smile on his lips. The girl smiled before messing up his hair on his head while she had a mouthful of food. He groaned at the older girl's actions while she swallowed and laughed. They both continued eating in silence until they were finished causing them to both get up and look at the clock. They both had about 30 minutes until they had to be at school, Nate being in eighth grade and Marlowe being in the eleventh they went to different schools.

"Want me to ride with you today? Or do wanna go by yourself?" Marlowe questioned her brother as she walked back down the steps to see him staring at a black place in the wall out of boredom. Her voice knocked him out of the trance he was in before he turned to respond.

"I can ride by myself," A small look of displeasure crossed Marlowe's features causing her brother to stand up and place his hands on her shoulders, "I'll be fine I promise. If it makes you feel any better I'll be riding with the boys anyways."

Marlowe reluctantly agreed pulling her brother into a tight hug before ruffling his hair and letting him go.

She watched as he rode down the road on his bike before he was too far to see causing her to move away from the window, running a hand through her damp hair before grabbing her backpack and checking her watch, that was once her mother's, that laid on her left wrist before quickly hurrying out the door and locking it. She grabbed her skateboard from beside the wall and kicked off riding down the hill, stopping every couple of minutes so she didn't fall off.
