Wolf woke me with a rough shake on the shoulder.
"Ugh. What do you want?" I grumbled.
"We need breakfast," he said.
"Can't you wait?"
"No, come on. We haven't had a decent meal in days, Skelly, you know that."
"I hate it when you call me that, you know."
"I know, that's why I insist on doing so, dear sister." I rolled my eyes.
"Come on. Somewhere in this great house there's got to be food!" Wolf cajoled.
"Fine, let's go." I lugged myself out of the blankets and we crept down the wooden stairs, careful not to step on any creaky loose boards. When we went downstairs, we found the horse-man and a guy in a Hawaiian shirt, plus a goat-man sitting at a table playing cards.
"It's still early yet," I said to Wolf. "A bit early for cards." Wolf nodded. We peered around the corner unnoticed.
"Goat-men? Horse-men? Skelly, am I going nuts?" Wolf gaped. I was too busy ogling the trio to be mad about his use of my name.
"No," I finally answered his question. "I see them too."
The horse-man lay down his cards and said, "I believe the game goes to me. Now, we must go rouse the campers for breakfast and cabin inspection."
The Hawaiian shirt man grunted, "Fine. Take Grover with you."
"Grover? Is that the goat-man?" I hissed to Wolf. He shrugged.
"Whoever you are, you should be advised that I am Dionysus, and I deal with intruders severely. Come out or I'll make you," said Hawaiian shirt man, now Dionysus.
We revealed ourselves. We must have looked like a wreck. One 15 year-old and one 13 year-old, looking like death, most likely.
"How long have you been here?" He asked, waving a hand. A goblet of what looked like Coke appeared on the table. He took a swig and pulled a face. "I miss wine..." he mumbled.
"We came last night, chased by a huge black dog. Her arm got chomped. We stayed overnight in a closet," Wolf explains as I stare at the leopard on the mantle. Is that real?
Dionysus said, "Go outside to Chiron and explain."
"Who's that?" I asked.
"The centaur."
"What?"
"The horse-man." He said exasperated.
"Oh, him!" Wolf crowed. "OK, we're going."
We ran out the door, catching everyone's attention, including Chiron the centaur's.
"Hi, Dionysus sent us," Wolf said. Chiron looked down at us.
"We didn't see you come through the border. How did you arrive here?"Chiron asked.
"We ran up the hill last night," I said. "We were in the rain running from this huge black dog that mangled my arm-" I held it up for him to see. "And it nearly got Wolf."
"Wolf?" Chiron asked.
"Me!" Wolf grinned.
"We spent the night in a closet in that big house," I pointed. "Then we went to look for food, see what we could scavenge, then Dionysus found us."
