"Clarisse! Clarisse!" Wolf shrieked. He looked around wildly. "We need to get her to the Big House!"
A bunch of Ares kids cleared the way except for Wolf. They let him stay for reasons I was unclear on. Chiron assisted in carrying the fallen warrior on his back. Wolf was in hysterics. I held him as Clarisse was carted away.
"But what if she doesn't live! Whatever attacked her, what if her wounds are fatal because of what it did?" Wolf cried.
"She's too tough to die from that. She survived the Second Titan War, she won't die from these." I assured him. But he was still shaking and blinking away tears. I accompanied him back to the Hermes cabin. He lay down on a bunk and put a pillow over his head.
"Skelly?" He asked.
"Yeah?"
"Will she be okay?"
"I don't know."
"Hmm." He fell silent. I felt so bad for him, I couldn't explain why. Clarisse, we'd known her for a day, it wasn't like we'd been besties. I honestly didn't know why he was so choked up. To be honest, Clarisse hadn't shown us any kindness since she hauled off on the Ares kids beating up Wolf. And something was off about that. Had it been me, I know she wouldn't have come to my rescue. I didn't think she liked me.
"Wolf. Skeleton," Chiron's shadow darkened the sun-brightened doorway. "We need to talk."
Wolf tensed. "What do you want."
"I need to know what was happening with the hellhound. And I need to know if you know why Clarisse was hurt." Wolf scowled.
"You think I would want to hurt her? Why would I hurt her?" he spat.
Chiron said, "I don't think that. I just need to know if you have any information."
"No, we don't," I stepped in. "We exited the arena and saw the hellhound. We fought it and it fell on Wolf. Then you came and it disintegrated. If disintegration is what's supposed to happen to monsters when we kill them, this must have been a delayed reaction," I explained. "Then Wolf alerted us to the fact that Clarisse was hurt. Now here we are."
Chiron thought. "I see. Thank you. Lunch is now, by the way. Head to the dining pavilion." With that, the centaur left the Hermes cabin.
"Come on. We need food, then we'll check on Clarisse." I promised Wolf.
"Fine," he said. "Let's go."
We were late to lunch but still got tons of food, sandwiches and the like. Wolf still looked down, but food cheered him up considerably. As we ate, he made small talk with the other Hermes campers. I heard him say to Travis,
"When do you think we'll be claimed? Percy said we're past the age limit, so shouldn't we be claimed by now?"
Travis said, "I don't know. Only the gods can tell. But looking at you? Hermes for sure. If it isn't Hermes, I'll eat my own foot." Wolf laughed.
"What about Skelly?"
He shrugged. "I dunno. She's kind of out there. Not a definite this or that."
"I can hear you." I said.
"I know,"
"I'm done," I announced. "Is it free time now?"
"Yeah," Travis said. "You can go do weapons training, running, the like." I nodded. I walked out and passed the volleyball court. Some Ares kids and some Athena kids were arguing over a lost point. Not like I cared.
