“How was school you two,” my mother asked timidly as she worked on dinner, her back to us as we walked through the door.
“School was school,” James and I say together, walking in and dropping our backpacks on the ground, seemingly both prepared to ignore the fact that we had homework.
Slowly turning, my mother gave both of us a look, a look that said pretty much everything; ‘Pick those back up, go to your room, and complete your assignments.’ She topped it off by giving us a smile and verbally saying, “Dinner will be done by six, I’ve been making roast with roasted vegetables and mash potatoes.”
Of course at the sound of a good dinner, both my stomach and my brother’s growled. It wasn’t often we got to eat such a meal. We had low rank within the pack, my folks had poor paying jobs in society, and to top it off the werewolf community didn’t have programs like food-stamps and didn’t allow them for their pack members.
Yep. We could starve for all they cared as long as we stayed out of the human system. Which, to be honest was stupid, because we were already in the system by going to public human school and having jobs.
Yeah, werewolves aren’t the brightest, believe me, I know.
Sitting in our room pretending to do homework until dinner was ready, my brother glanced my way. ‘Have you thought about tomorrow? I mean shifting for the first time and what comes with it?’
I tilted my head, staring at his face, trying to figure out what more there was to shifting. ‘Er… Nope, nada, nothing comes to mind.’
Suddenly James seemed to be caught in a choking fit his body bucked in protest. By the time he settled, I was giggling like a madwoman, rolling around on the floor holding my soon to be aching sides.
‘You’re… face! Oh moon, you’re face!’ I laughed out loud more and held my sides.
Righting himself, James glanced at me sideways trying hard not to burst with laughter as well, playing it cool.
‘What about- Never mind. Did you forget what happens after your first shift? We might find our mates within the pack at the party!’
That thought stopped my laughter. Find our mates? Really? Don’t get me wrong, it’s every she-wolf’s fantasy. However it just wasn’t really mine. I mean, sure, love, awesomesauce. Except, I had this terrible feeling that it wasn’t going to be a bucket of awesomesauce. I had a feeling it was going to be a headache, one I would really much love to avoid at all costs.
“Hey Rue, earth to Rue, you can come back now,” my brother was almost yelling right in my face, my pale blue almost grey eyes blinking a moment before zoning in on his own identical pair.
“Huh, I wasn’t listening.”
“Noticed. Anyway, I was asking if you’re excited about finding your mate.”
“Nope,” I stated, void of emotion.
He leaned away from me, his head cocking to the side. “Are you sure you’re a girl? Seriously isn’t the only thing that matters to a girl is finding love?”
I shrug. Maybe I wasn’t a girl, but some alien werewolf where we just duplicate to breed.
“That would be one hilarious werewolf book,” my brother said, hearing my thoughts and throwing his head back laughing.
