"What?" Chung was dumbfounded.
Sonya slowly pieced it together as Katrina was speaking. It was obvious once she added it all together. Katrina was too keen in making sure Carissa didn't speak about her concerns to the cops. Who else would want to harm Katrina so personally? Who else would feel compelled to attack an organization she built to protect the reputation of women who had deep and dark secrets? Especially if those secrets were having a child out of wedlock.
"What does the son have to do with anything?" Sonya was about to answer Chung's question, when Kai interrupted.
"Everything." Kai turned his attention to Katrina. He was looking at Katrina with disdain. He was an orphan himself, and he was the only one in the room who can understand her son's intent. Kai understood what it was like to feel so angry at his birth parents. He knew how much it hurt to be abandoned. Kai also didn't know why his biological parents' gave him up, and he wasn't sure if he even cared. Why should he? Why should he wonder about parents who never wondered about him? "He wants revenge."
With that being said, Katrina bursted into fresh sobs.
"I was in love with his father. I thought he would stay, but he didn't and I thought we would run away together....be a family together. But his father leaving, only made things more difficult for me." Katrina blew her nose and wiped the tears from her face. "You have to know, I only learned about Christopher after he killed Heather. He said I owed him, and that if I told anyone, Carissa would die next."
"His blackmail shouldn't have mattered though. He tried to kill Carissa anyway!" Chung got up in rage. Katrina was ashamed. She couldn't take back her sins. It may not have been her fault, the other murders, but Carissa's attempted murder could have been avoided. All she needed to do was come forward with the truth. Katrina was going to face charges for withholding evidence; withholding her son's name would only make things worse. "What's his name?"
"I named him Christopher. But I overheard him talking on the phone using an alias: Jack Walden."

Chung was a combination of pissed and shocked. After all, how could she have been showing the ropes of the SPD lifestyle to a murderer? He was right there, under her nose. She drank morning coffee with him, complained about her cheating ex-husband, and even asked him to pick up her son after school when she buried under paperwork. Chung saw herself in Walden. He was serious but excited to get his feet wet. Also in a way, passing on her knowledge of the department was the stepping stone to becoming chief.
As for Sonya, she has learned to expect the unexpected. Her father once told her, the things we think are the obvious answer, are just an easy solution; they are flawed and most of the time lead to more problems. Removing the obvious, replacing it with the unexpected leads to the heart of the answer. The opponent uses the unexpected to keep the victim at bay, while they plan the victim's end.
Look for the unexpected.
Kai was confused. He didn't understand why Chung and Sonya were looking at each other with silent understanding. Sonya turned to him, "We'll explain in the car."
Sonya, Chung, and Kai made their way to Chung's car. Chung was frantically trying to figure out where Walden was.
"So that cop you were flirting with, killed those girls."
"I was not flirting---nevermind. Yes."
"Yes, you were flirting or..?" Sonya gave Kai an exasperated look. Chung looked at the both of them and told them to quiet down.
