Mirror Mirror Beautiful

Look into the mirror,

A flawed face you see,

Body too curvy, too fat, so to say,

Disappointment hits like a bucket of cold water.

Look into the mirror,

Cake on the make-up,

A list too long to name,

Mascara, lipstick, powder as well,

Just enough to make you beautiful,

Desirable for others to see.

Look into the mirror,

Skipping meals has truly done wonders,

No longer can the scale stare back at you with a frown,

Five pounds have gone down the drain with vigour and pride.

Look into the mirror,

Still not enough,

No compliments.

No astonishment,

Nothing.

Stop looking at the mirror,

And hear the hushed whispers around,

What has she done?     Uh-oh            Is she okay?

Tears slip like a waterfall,

The makeup wiped off with a swipe,

Slump to the ground of exhaustion,

You look like a mess,

Look into the mirror,

Gone under the knife,

A few changes here and there,

Enough to satisfy,

For a while…

Look into the mirror,

Like what you see?

No?

Change it to your heart’s desire,

Don’t stay the same;

Become beautiful.

Yet, what is beauty?

I’m sick of what society has transformed us into. We’re monsters through and through. Outer beauty matters. We get that. But so does the inner. I mean, it’s like a cupcake. The cupcake may look good, but what if it tastes really bad? Is it really worth it?

We’ve all been made a certain way. It makes us unique, different. And unless you’re really willing to forget what you ever looked like to look like someone else, then embrace it. Looking at yourself into the mirror, that image won’t change.

If you don’t love yourself, others won’t as well. And loving yourself is not an easy thing to do. I should know; no matter how confident one may be, there is always doubt gnawing at the back of the mind.

Share your story. Share your insecurities, and how you got past them… or how you still doubt yourself. Because at the end of the day, we’re all going through them. And to know that someone is going through the same thing, I think eases us just a bit.
