There was a time fairies, witches and humans used to live in harmony. Despite their many differences, a balance was kept between the three species, and their relationships were more than peaceful. They were based on helping and completing each other.
This balance was mostly due to two crystals, the Light Crystal and the Dark Crystal. The Light Crystal, possession of the fairies, thrives off goodness, happiness and generosity. The Dark Crystal, property of witches, thrives off negativity, jealousy and hatred. To make sure neither overpowered the other, they were given to the strongest specimen of both species.
It would have gone perfectly well if it wasn't for a man, who was much too creative for his time. You might know him under the name Hans. Interested in the dynamic of the two Crystals, he studied them and the behavior of both fairies and witches. This is how he gave birth to short stories he called Fairy Tales.
In them, the fairies and humans were always the good ones, fighting for a greater cause and being struck by disaster when they were completely innocent. On the other hand, witches were depicted as evil beings, who found pleasure in causing trouble to the two other species. It should've been only stories, but the humans took it too seriously.
Believing the Fairy Tales as if they weren't just a work of fiction, they managed to convince themselves that witches were actually a threat to their lives and peace. They turned their back on them, and engaged in a merciless hunt to kill them all. The witch hunt started.
Innocent witches who had done nothing to deserve such treatment were executed, burned alive and tortured. Those who were still alive couldn't bear the loss of their fellows. Alarmed, they decided to fight back, starting a never ending cycle. They had to find a way to punish them without violence.
Thus was created the Fairy Tale curse. They who loved the fairy tales so dearly would have to live them. Each tale had its own curse, each with more and more terrifying conditions.
Watching the balance of the two Crystals fall apart, the fairies sought to restore peace and order. They tried to talk to the witches and the humans, to reason and convince them to put an end to their feud. But it went past them. It had already gone too far.
This is how the Great War started, opposing the fairies and the witches. It was a tough time for all three of the species, and the amount of deaths was spectacular.
After a few long years of war, the bearer of the Dark Crystal was finally defeated, and peace reigned again. But the witches weren't completely gone. And while a few of them remained as good as witches can be, some were still deeply corrupted by the influence of the Crystal. The war may have had ended, but the curse was still roaming the streets like a plague.
It sounds like a pretty bedtime story you wouldn't give much thought to, but what happens if you stumble upon that curse and suffer its consequences?
