To a Girl Three Years Ago
She's such a good girl.
You can see it in her eyes:
They dream of miracles and joy,
A life beyond misery and pain. They all surround her
Curiosity shimmers in their eyes.
And she takes them, graciously under her wing.
Wind blows, cards fall, and one by one, they all go,
To the other side of the road. She shatters, the pain lingers.
But she's a good girl.
She puts her past behind,
and dreams of another day:
A life beyond hurt and disappointment.She says she'll look down upon all the buildings;
She says she'll hear the ocean rolling and
She says we'll do it,
her and I, it's no joke,
we'll make it.How fragile this is, how delicately bound,
But she tugs upon it so hard,
The seams come apart.
But she's such a good girl.
She'll work it out. After all, we are who we are.
She'll go to her bunny next.
Their laughter rings out like chimes and bells.
But it ain't a symphony:
It pierces you like shards of glass.
But you are a good girl.
It makes you guilty.Indeed, we are who we are.
She says we'll do it,
it's no joke,
we'll make it.
Yeah, we will
You hesitate. And that's the sound of a broken promise.
She's a good girl, she still is.
She thinks opening floodgates will save
crumbling castles and
heal miserable wretches. So you try and say, all the whirlwind in your head.
Instead, what comes out is:
Everything's okay.
So she'll shrug it off, you'll just smile. But don't you know, good girls don't lie?
