If you haven't noticed, I like to make up a lot of my own rules when it comes to the supernatural and otherwise. I use other stories as inspiration, of course, but I always like to see what kind of world I can create on my own. For example, in some stories, mates can reject each other and in mine, they can't.

How do you guys feel about reading stories with contrasting rules like that?

Millicent agreed to help clean up dinner with Ulrik as Griselda ran off to finish the last touches of her ritual set up. Millicent couldn't help but steal glances at the big Viking, just like she had when they were preparing dinner and while they were all eating together. The wolf always had a smile on his face. When he looked at Griselda or caught Millicent staring, it brightened, otherwise, he seemed pretty content.

It was harmless, Millicent thought, that Griselda made him this happy. She just couldn't find it in herself to be okay with it. It wasn't real happiness.

"Are you... happy.. with Griselda?" Millicent hesitantly asked as he cleaned a plate and handed it to Millicent to dry.

Ulrik chuckled as he stared into the sink. "Yes. Why do you ask, little one? Don't I look happy?"

The fact that he hadn't stopped smiling since she met him made her skin crawl as he said that. "Well, yeah.. I guess.." There was silence before she spoke again. "Does she use her magic on you?"

"Sometimes." Millicent perked up with shock. So, he knew? Shouldn't his awareness of it break the spell? "Sometimes I break, but Griselda is always there to fix it. She helps everyone here. All of their problems and worries, she fixes it all."

Millicent scoffed in disbelief as she shook her head. Griselda didn't fix their problems, Millicent was smart enough to know that. She probably just made them forget about their worries or let go of them. That didn't fix anything. How was anything suppose to get done if everybody just walked around in blind, ignorant bliss? It was sketchy. Millicent didn't like the way Griselda used her magic. It wasn't right.

But then again, Millicent had just attempted to murder someone a few short days ago. When she realized that, she decided to put her judgement aside. She was in no position to be talking all high and mighty, as if she had ever used her powers for good...

Millicent couldn't help but notice the complete lack of werewolves around them. One of the things Walter and Iven always bitched about was that the pack had to take care a lot of the chores in the house while the Alpha, Luna, and other higher ranking wolves didn't have to do anything. It made Millicent wonder why Ulrik was washing dishes, and cooked, and why he had prepared a room. As the Alpha, didn't he not have to lift a finger around here?

"You're the Alpha, right?" Millicent asked, just to make sure so her assumptions weren't wrong.

"Yes." Ulrik nodded, that same, friendly, closed mouth smile on his face.

"So, why are you doing all of this? Can't you order someone else to do it for you?"

Ulrik's eyebrows pulled in. "I know you've been around rogues the last couple days, and they've probably said some pretty bad things, but I don't order around my pack members just because I can."

"Why not? It's not like they'd blame you. You can get away with never lifting a finger as the Alpha." Millicent pressed.

"You're right," Ulrik glanced at Millicent to see a bit of intrigue flash through her eyes. "I could order them around and they'd likely never question it. But Millicent, you are a special guest in this house, so I didn't want anyone disturbing dinner. After all, look at us now. We're bonding."
