6.
"Shaylie?" I woke to Will calling my name from the base of the stairs. I could hear his heavy footsteps making their way to my room. "Shaye." He sat on the edge of my bed and brushed some of my hair away from my face. I was turned away from him with my eyes closed, but somehow he knew I was awake. "Shaye, it's almost noon, you need to get up. Time to do something with your life." He said. I only groaned in response.
"I'm tired." I muffled into my pillow. "Oh yeah? Well I'm tired too... Tired of all your shit." He said quietly and stood up. I opened my eyes slowly so they could adjust to the light. "I'll meet you outside in ten minutes." He paused at the door. "If you're not out there, I'll come back in here and drag you out of bed and take you looking like that." He gestured to my appearance of messy hair and pajamas.
"You can't make me do anything!" I shouted at him after he'd closed the door. Moments later the it burst open and he comes in and goes straight to my wardrobe. He shuffles through the various items of clothing before he throws some jeans and a top at the bottom end of the bed. He's made quite the habit of picking out my clothes.
"You wanna bet?" He said with an irritated scowl. I playfully hid under the covers of the duvet. He caught on to my little game and was still slightly angry, but gave in. He lightly tugged on my arms to pull me out of bed. "Ow! No, no stop." I laughed. "Then get up, you lazy butt!" He pleaded between laughs.
"Fine!" I scrambled out of bed and scooped up the clean clothes. I headed for the bathroom to have shower and asked Will where we were going. I closed the door and waited for the answer as I undressed. "It's a surprise." He said through the wood barrier. "I hate surprises!" I said, starting the water. "I know." He laughed. "I'll just wait until you're finished." I managed to make out that last sentence before the sound of the water took over. I didn't even bother to respond.
I finished showering and dried off before realizing I had no underwear. I opened the door just a crack, still wrapped in my towel. "Will." He turned around in my desk chair. "Yeah?"
"Could you get me some knickers and a bra?"
"Sure." He stood up to rummage through the top drawer of my dresser. I checked to see if my towel was still holding up.
"Here." He handed me a pair that didn't match up.
"Will? These don't match. Will you put this back and get me the black one?" I said handing him the light pink bra.
"So picky." He huffed, but did as I asked. I gave a rushed "Thank you." And closed the door before pulling on the underwear.
I used my towel to clear the fog from the mirror to admired my outfit. Will had chosen a pair of dark jeans, the Rolling Stones shirt I'd bought about a month ago, and my short black leather jacket.
I emerged from the steamy room and Will was gone. I grabbed a red pair of shoes and ran downstairs.
"Will?" I called. "In here." His response came from the kitchen. I walked in and he was sitting on the countertop typing away on his phone. He held up a finger signaling for me to wait. I took the spot next to him waiting for him to finish.
"You ready?" He said jumping off. "I guess." I said accepting his help down. "Where are we going?" I begged for an answer. "Somewhere special. But first, we need to run a few errands." He smiled a wicked, but excited smile, and I knew I was in for it.
Hours had passed and I just prayed that we did not go to another grocery store. "Well this is exactly the way I wanted to spend my birthday." I said. "Oh. Is that today?" Will said seriously. No wonder e didn't say anything about it. I can't believe he'd forgotten! It had only been on the same day for the past eighteen years. Well, nineteen now.
We'd gone to store after store and all he had gotten were three bags of crisps and some fizzy drinks. "Sorry Shaye," he said after a while of silence. "Honestly, I completely forgot, let me make it up to you?" He asked for my acceptance. "Okay. It's not that big of a deal." I said.
"Of course it is! It's your nineteenth birthday, Shaye." He said.
"No, it's fine." I said looking out the window.
"I have one more place to stop, then we'll go to the actual place we were supposed to go today." He smiled when I looked back at him. I gave him a smile and a small nod. "Good." He said focusing back on the road ahead.
After stopping to get me a bouquet of balloons, Will pulled up to the side of a large house and got out of the car. "What are we doing here?" I asked as he guided me to the door. "This is a friend of mine's place." He grinned as he knocked. "Oh. Nice." I said.
The door opened moments later and Duncan appeared. He looked different since the last time I saw him, which was a week after we met... Almost a month ago. "Shaye!" He exclaimed, pulling me in for a hug.
"Duncan!" I said in about the same tone. I hugged him back and he led Will and I into the house. "Why is it so dark in here?" Will asked. Almost as if on cue, all the lights turned on and a huge mass of voices screamed "SURPRISE!" I nearly jumped out of my skin. I immediately turned to Will. "I hate you." I mouthed.
