Will slung an arm around my shoulder and laughed. I just smiled and lightly punched him in the chest. "Who are all these people?" I asked as music started. "Well, because you don't have many friends, Duncan invited his. But they're all here for you. He told them it was a surprise party for a cute girl's birthday and they just showed up." He shrugged. "How sweet." I said in a bland tone, adding a smile so it wouldn't come off rudely.
We rounded a corner into a kitchen. Duncan had his back to us, but turned within a few moments, placing a large cake on the center island. It displayed my name written in blue and green icing, and nineteen pink candles around the edge. "He forgot the 'E'." I whispered to Will. "Sorry, I was too busy trying to keep you distracted so they could set everything up, that I must've forgotten to remind Duncan." He said. "Oh... Right." I said after realizing.
Several people gathered in and around the kitchen as Duncan lit the candles. "Okay Shaye, we're going to sing now." Duncan smiled after lighting the last one. "No, no. That's okay." I can just make a wish. "If that is the lady's request, ten so be it." He moved away allowing me to get closer to the small flames. I didn't really have anything to wish for, as I assume most people don't, so I just blew out the candles as was expected. Then everyone clapped and cheered as if it were actually something special.
A while later, I walked up to Duncan while he was playing out random dance moves. "Thank you." I gushed. "It was so nice of you to put this together for me." I smiled. "Don't thank me, thank Will. It was his idea." He pointed at Will who was sat on the sofa, eating cake with a few girls I had met earlier. "I figured as much. But, still. Thank you, for everything." I gave him a meaningful hug before leaving him to his way of dance.
As I was walking over to Will, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I spun to find a male with a familiar mop of dark curls and his complete attention on me. "Hi Shaye." He smiled. "Oh God." I rolled my eyes and started to walk away. He caught hold of my wrist and pulled me back into his chest. "What?" He said in disbelief at my response and scowled down at me. "Leave me alone Harry. It shouldn't be that hard, considering you've done a great job at avoiding me for over a month." I spat. "Why are you even here?" I asked. "Duncan invited me." He grinned.
"Duncan? You're one of Duncan's friends?"
"I'm not just his friend, Doll. I'm his cousin." His grin only grew. And he took my wrist higher, putting it over his shoulder. When I tried to resist, he held tighter against his shirt and grabbed at my free hand.
"Oh Shaye. I see you've met Harry." Duncan said a bit uneasily as he approached us.
"We've met before." Harry told him.
"Unfortunately." I muttered, lowering my vision to the floor under my captured arm.
"You son of a bitch." I heard Will's voice carry throughout the room. The music had stopped by the time he'd made his way over to the slightly larger male and myself. A small circle of party guests had formed around the four of us.
Harry released my wrist to face Will. "I told you never to touch her again." He roared. "Will, it's fine." I said calmly and hugged Harry from the side, keeping a straight face. If he thought I'd made peace with the situation I had with Harry, he wouldn't start anything. The surprise on both if their faces was definitely one for the history books.
"When did this happen?" Will almost demanded. "A little over a month ago." Harry said hesitantly and smiled down at me, then gave a barely noticeable wink. I unwrapped my arms and stood closer to Will. "I've moved past all the stupid shit that happened. It feels like it was so long ago anyway. But there is no 'this'." I told him, gesturing to Harry and I.
