Epilogue
Why even bother with paying attention in class... it's never going to get me anywhere. I'm the greatest hunter here, so what's the point! “I'd like it if you paid attention, Ethan,” the teacher bores.
I stand up out of my seat and shrug. “You know I don't have to take this class... my father just decided it'd be good for me to socialize with other people, and find my right team.”
“Please sit back down,” she sighs. I scowl at her and fall back in my seat, propping my legs up on the desk. “When are you ever going to learn?!”
“When my father dies and I take over as general of the camp,” I smirk, laughing as loud as I can. Glancing around the room, all the kids are rolling their eyes, or telling me to shut up. Whatever, I don't need them. They're just jealous!
The only one who really cares is my friend Kelly, who sits on the other side of the class. I peer over to her, and she waves a friendly hello, her bright pink hair bouncing up and down. I nod a hello and fall back into my seat, waiting for class to be over. I can't stand to sit all period, and I can't stand this class.
The bell rings and all the other kids run out the door, back to their bases. “Ethan, can I speak to you for a second?” the teacher asks.
“Sure, what is it?” I stay in my seat while she walks over to me and sits down in a chair close by. “If it's about my grades, I don't—”
“Your father has put you in this class for a reason, correct?” I nod my head in agreement. “That reason is to get along with other kids, besides Kelly. When you turn 13, you're going to be assigned a team, and you'll be expected to cooperate with them.”
“I can do that; easy peasy!” I rest my hands behind my head, and smile at her. “But... can Kelly be in my group? She gets shy around other people.”
“Of course, Ethan!” she exclaims. “I'm so glad you're thinking about other people's emotions besides yours.” I roll my eyes and glower at her. I always think of other people! Just like... him.
“I want to hear the story about your son,” I insist. “He sounds just like a fairy tale would be! Is... that okay Mrs. Crescent?”
“I'm expecting him to arrive at Zombie Camp any time; he's a smart boy, you know,” she beams. “I just wish I could've said goodbye to him.”
