Chapter 7
“Someone tell me what happened?” I moan. Everything from yesterday is a blur. I remember many things, like the apocalypse. Also Shane was there, and that girl Danielle... Carl... Ritsu... oh no.
My eyes bulge open, welcoming me to the world that isn't filled with ponies and rainbows. More like destruction and chaos. But one thing confuses me... why am I on the floor? And why is there a force, preventing me from moving? “Excuse me, Miss Sleeping Beauty, but my body is numb,” I deadpan.
Ally lifts up her head, hair all messy, and looks at me with the one eye that's only partially open. My eyes open even wider. She's really cute... I murmur in my mind, afraid some stupid mind-reader will hear and tell everyone. Yes, I actually am that paranoid. “Oh, good morning to you too,” she says sarcastically, yet too tired to be an insult.
She stands up, and that's when my hormones kick in. Her shirt she wore to school is slightly misplaced... it doesn't seem like she's wearing anything underneath... I wasn't even allowed to take off my pants! How is this fair at all?! Wait a minute... “Dude!” Shane screams from across the room. I peer over to the other side of the vault and find him cooking breakfast with his parents and Danielle. “Operation Turtle!” I immediately know what he means. Quickly, without thinking, I cross my legs Indian style and curl up into a ball, thinking of math equations. The blonde skips over, about to laugh until his guts burst. He tells Ally to go help Danielle with cooking, in which she reluctantly agrees—she's obviously confused.
“What... just happened?” I mutter, my face probably burning up.
“Dude.” My best friend sits down with me and glares at me in the eyes. “You know what just happened. Is there something going on that I don't know about?” I raise an eyebrow, trying to not know what he's talking about. Unfortunately I do, and rub my neck—a tacit defeat among us. “Just accept it. You're a guy and she's a girl.” Yeah... a girl with a great figure, mocking me right in front of my face. “Let's go eat and you can forget about it.”
“That sounds like a good idea,” I sigh. “I'm probably just hungry.” We stand up and we walk together to the rest of the bunch, Shane patting me on the back. It seems Carl and Ritsu had just woken up, because they're down at the table eating eggs and bacon. I fake-cough so everyone stops what they're doing and faces me. “Okay, so what time is it and when are we leaving?”
“Right now it is December 30th, 6:30 AM. I have our whole schedule planned out, by the way!” the redhead exclaims. I roll my eyes and he scoffs, continuing. “Leaving at 8:00 AM, Ritsu and I will take turns driving. We will first drive from here to Virginia, which will be around the 6 hours and 30 minutes, bringing us to 2:30 PM. There, we will travel from Virginia to North Carolina and reach the state by 5:10 PM. At this time we will take a break and be back on the road by 5:20 PM. The trip from North Carolina to South Carolina will leave us there at 9:00 PM. We will find an inhabitant area and stake it out, taking turns sleeping. When we awake in the morning of December 31 at 9:00 AM, we will travel to Georgia. Arriving at Georgia will bring us to 12:20 PM. Our last drive will be to Miami, Florida, and we will be at the docks by 8:10 PM. The boats should arrive on 11:30 and leave at midnight, so we have a few hours to spare if there are some unnecessary incidents. Any questions?”
