My mother gazed down at me, love shining from her eyes. I let out a small gurgle and tugged at a lock of her golden hair with my chubby baby fingers. She laughed and something wet landed on my face. I let out a small cry as more of the wet things landed on me. I scrunched up my face and looked up at my mum. The droplets seemed to be falling from her and I made a noise of protest, hoping that it would stop. Mum reached up a hand and wiped at her eyes, before picking me up. I snuggled into her shoulder, enjoying the warmth radiating from her. It was cold outside of my blankets and I hoped that she would put me back soon. Mum lifted me so that she was looking into my eyes.

"You be a good girl, ok Saffron? Don't go getting into any trouble without me, alright?" Her voice cracked slightly on the last sentence and I stared at her in confusion, why does she look so sad? I held my arms out, trying to cheer her up. Mum laughed again, before breaking down into tears. She carefully laid me back into the pile of blankets and wrapped me up before picking me up again and cradling me in her arms. I sighed in contentment and closed my eyes. They were startled open though when I felt the rocky ground underneath my back again. I looked up at mum in confusion. What was she doing? Mum gave me a look that would haunt me forever, even after I had grown up. She knocked on a large wooden door that seemed to have appeared out of thin air. I let out a whimper. What was going on? I stared up at my mum in confusion as she started backing away. Then, she disappeared. I looked around for her, but all I could see was a spotted brown wolf running into the nearby woods.

I scrunched up my face and started bawling. Where was mum? Why had she gone away? As if summoned by my cries, the door opened and an elderly woman stepped out. She stared down at me in shock before picking me up and looking around. I continued screaming and crying, my shrieks echoing down the long corridor that stretched out from the door. The elderly woman held me out and scrutinised me carefully. "Who brought you here little one?" When I continued screaming, she started making soothing noises. "You poor thing, let’s get you inside."  She told me as she turned around and walked through the large doorway. I stared over her shoulder at the forest. I could swear that I saw a pair of gleaming eyes watching me as the door closed behind us.
