forty four: real life

"there they are!" thomas shouted across the lobby. workers looked up, but then back down.

"here we are," rose said, grabbing her sunglasses out of her bag.

"ready?" diego asked.

"ready," i answered.

we put the blanket down, and i took of my t-shirt and ran right into the water. rose followed, then thomas, then diego.

the water was freezing, as it usually is in june. i quickly ran in, jumping up and down to warm myself up. diego ran in after me, attempting to splash me, but i went under the water. when i came back up, his eyes were wide open.

"what?"

"you just went right under?"

"summer full send," i put two peace signs up.

"you're so cute."

"thanks, i know. rose told me already."

"are you cheating?"

"so what if i am?"

"you're so going under!" he lunged at me, but i splashed him. he flinched because it was so cold. i jumped on his back and he went under.

"who's going under now?"

"you're going under his sheets!" rose shouted from where the waves were crashing. she was only knee deep.

"nice one!" thomas high fived her.

"gross. when are y'all going to date anyways?" diego rolled his eyes.

"when you and evelyn kiss."

"that's uncalled for," i laughed, going under a wave.

i wrapped my towel around me, smiling at the sight in front of me. three of my best friends in the best place in the world. soon, they all came out of the freezing cold water and laid down on their towels.

i woke up to thomas and rose chomping on fruit right in my ear.

"the queen has awoken," thomas whispered.

"she finally wakes up!" rose smiled.

"what time is it?" i asked.

"around noon. are you hungry yet?" diego asked, pulling out sandwhiches from a cooler.

"sure!" i smiled. he handed me a sandwhich from a cooler. "what'd i miss?"

"diego was staring at you. diego took a picture of you sleeping. diego hissed at me because i saw him take a picture of you. diego ate his depression away. diego went into the water and ran out. and rose and i were over here chilling," thomas said, counting everything he listed.

"this all happened in... two hours?" i asked.

"you're leaving out the part where thomas told rose he liked her," diego spoke through chews.

i choked on my sandwich.

"WHAT NOW?"

"i told rose i liked her," he flipped his hair.
