INDIRA STARTED TO play with her phone again. Oh how much she hated working mornings. It's not like she's never done worked them before, it's just that working mornings meant that it was going to be a very, very long day. She had done nearly everything to pass the time: she restocked the pizza boxes, cleaned the soda machine, and even started doodling on some receipt paper. Sundays were always this slow this early in the day, so passing the time sometimes never helped.
About a week and some change after her and Luca's date, they remained cordial. Between customers, they talked here and there, but things were still weird. Like she had expected, he asked her out again for a do-over, but she heeded Natasha's advice and confidently told him that it was just not going to work out. Even if it did end up working out, she never truly saw him in her future. Her mother always told her that love was supposed to be organic, but this date with Luca was anything but.
Today was another cover shift. Juniper said she had something to do in the morning, so she decided to cover. Even though there was one other phone girl, Juniper trusted Indira that she would follow through, unlike the other girl who was known to flake last minute. Indira thought the other girl would be fired by now, but the boss was too much of a pushover to actually let her go.
After she took her break around 3:30, the boss came up to her.
"Hey you can leave now. Jaclyn is coming to cover the night shift." The boss untied his apron from around his waist and took off his cap. He was here to help the kitchen side, but since the hours were barely ticking by and there were less than a hundred orders, he was going to leave for the night.
"Why? It's only four and I'm here till five," she asked while looking at her wristwatch.
"It's slow anyway," he shrugged.
Well there goes the extra money in the bank, she mentally sighed. Even though she worked all week last week from open to close, it wasn't bad to have a little extra savings, especially since her rent had gone up higher.
As soon as she clocks out and splits the tips between her and the other employees, Jaclyn walks in and says hi to everyone else but her. They never liked each other from the moment Indira trained her to be the new phone person. Jaclyn had this "I'm too good for you" personality, which is ironic considering the place she works at.
At six thirty, Indira had plans to pick up Natasha because her car refused to start that very morning, but since it was still early, she wanted to stay in the area so she wouldn't have to go home then come back out again.
A positive arose from this situation: Spring was already here, meaning that now she finally had a chance to shop for some new clothes. Hardly ever did she have enough time and money for herself since she only had one source of income. It was a nice day out anyway. The sun was shining through the thick ominous clouds which brought a new warmth to the earth. Spring was definitely here, the weather just had a funny way of showing it.
Half an hour and seven quarters later, Indira finally finds a parking spot next to a meter. She wasn't planning on staying the full hour and a half, but it was enough time if she did. Newbury Street was one of her favorite streets in Boston, and luckily for her it was a few minutes from her job. Newbury Street was just one long street filled with many high end stores as well as other popular stores, indie boutiques, thrift shops, and cafes. In the summer, this street was absolutely beautiful. The Cherry Blossom trees would be in full bloom and the side walks would be covered in dainty pink petals. Tulips and daffodils would be planted under surrounding trees adding different splashes of vibrant colors to the street.
Conversely, the view of the street during winter was barren and desolate looking. Snow dominated the small sidewalks, blocking entry ways and seating areas. It took a little extra effort for the street to look nice during the cold months, but even as gloomy as it looked, it wasn't all that bad. Indira remembered the times she would come here with her friends from high school and they would just hang out at Ben & Jerry's until it was time to go home. She missed those days when she had a bunch of friends to hang and fool around with, but after senior year, they all left and never returned.
