"jeongin-ah, hurry up!" i rush my brother, growing ever impatient. "you're going to be late for your exam if you keep going that pace!"
"okay, done!" jeongin sputters out as he finally finishes tying his shoes.
"come on, now," i pat his broadening shoulders, shuffling him in front of me and ushering him to the door as i twist the rusty knob. "hurry, hurry, hur-"
we both jump when the door opens to greet us with an unfamiliar man's figure already standing in the dim morning light, fist raised as if he was just about to knock.
"who are you?" i immediately question, instinctively pulling jeongin closer to me as i begin to shut the door in defense.
"whoa there," the man laughs awkwardly, placing his palm flatly on the door to stop it. "chill, yubin-ah. my name's chan. i'm one of hyunjin's friends. remember me?" despite my own nagging suspicion, i find myself put at ease by his smile. it's genuine and warm, very atypical of what i'm accustomed to.
his dimples remind me of my brother's.
speaking of him, his eyes began to sparkle as soon as hyunjin's name was mentioned.
"ah," he slowly takes a step forward and reaches his hand out as if to communicate to a scared, wounded animal that he means no harm. his fingers cautiously ghost over the stitches on my forehead. i flinch out of habit, but just this once... i don't bite.
"that really was quite the blow, huh? guess you wouldn't."
"n-no, uh... i don't remember you," i shake my head with a calmness, an almost instantaneous level of trust, that somehow shakes me. "but i do remember... hyunjin mentioning you, i think."
"next time chan can babysit you."
babysitting or not, i graciously welcome this boy's presence if it keeps me out of hyunjin's.
"hyung..." jeongin speaks up hesitantly, not sure if it's his place. "is there a reason you...?"
"oh, yeah!" chan laughs again, this time much more heartily, comfortably, as if we're the oldest of friends. "i'm here to give the two of you a ride, actually," he clarifies, gesturing behind him, where a small, sleek sports car, not a single blemish on its bright red paint, is parked haphazardly in the middle of the narrow street. "nice, huh? took me months of wearing changbin-ah down to pry it from him."
