"Months from now, we'll be remembered as heroes."

I glanced at Hendrik who was sitting next to me, but the male didn't so much look back at me. His spectacled eyes were fixed to the starry sky, hair ruffled softly by the wind.

"If by heroes you mean kids who are forced to sacrifice themselves for the 'greater good'," I replied with a flat tone.

I found no better words to describe the situation than those. I gripped the chair arm as my memory went back to that time. That time when my the sound of my name blared the town hall. That time when everyone's attention was on me as I stepped up to the stage with my head hanging.

"There's reasons why mandatory events like this is held," Hendrik said as he glanced at me. "The twenty-five people who died, didn't die for nothing."

I've heard the history thousands of times already. It had been told ever since I was five. Logically, it wasn't the right age to listen to story of violence and murder. And as I grew, I heard more and more versions of the story. Some think that some of them survived and escaped the country. Some said they were tortured and butchered by colonizers. But the most popular version that is taught in schools all over the country is that they all went savage and killed each other, resulting in one 'victor'. Finally alone in the jungle, he decided to kill himself by drowning himself in the river.

And that was how the Hunger Games was created. Chills ran down my spine as I imagined putting myself in that situation.

"And it's not politically bad, if you think about it," he added.

"I know," I said.

Growing up in State of Politics, I was used to think about everything that way. Is it politically good or bad? It is the basic, unwritten rule in State 6. The fundamental rule to keep our state life growing and developing.

I continued my dialogue with Hendrik. It has only been three weeks since I knew him, but we understood each other in some ways. I felt glad that he was picked to present State 6 with me. Compared to the other tributes, I felt most comfortable with him.
