Chapter two - 18 years

Melody's P.O.V

"Guys what shall we do about Saturday?" Sky, Alex and me were currently in my bedroom. Alex was lounging on the couch, while I laid in my bed and Sky sat at the floor, with her back pressed against the sofa.

I looked at Skylar, silently admiring her new short haircut, and replied. "I'll call Jay. The gig's off. And so are the others." My voice was monotone. "I mean, do you think Broken Silence can play without their bassist? I don't think so," I paused and sighed, "we founded the band with Jessica and she was, no still is, our best friend and I don't think it's fair to continue attending gigs. First of all, a member is missing and we can't spare the bass or, if I'm taking Jess' part , the guitar. It won't work," frustrated I run a hair through my dyed black hair ,"and secondly, I'm not motivated. It just doesn't feel the same without Jess. I'm happy for her, but I'm sad at the same time. She's now able to fulfill her dreams and I can't really think about anything else than our dream. Publishing our music. We were coming our dream closer every week and suddenly everything vanishes and we're at the beginning again." Alex and Skylar exchanged a glance before they turned to me and Alex spoke "Come on Mel, she left three days ago, now it's Thursday and our gig is in two days. If you really want to cancel, you better do it now. You know how serious Jay is about organisation." Jay was the owner of the towns pub JayO's. "And anyway, we all know that Jessica wouldn't like to see you giving up so quickly. She has finally gotten her chance to live her dream. That doesn't mean that we can't do the same. I mean, you were the one that encouraged and pushed us over the two years. We'll take care about the missing instrument. But the point is , we will find a solution. We always will." I sighed. I knew he was right, but they didn't understand how much it affected me that Jessica left. I grew up with her, due to our parents, that were close friends. But Alex and Sky didn't know what I went trough in the past, why I'd gotten tattoos and why I'd lost myself so quickly in music. Jessica knew everything about me. She was more than a best friend to me. She was a sister. She was my rock.

After a long period of time were nobody from us spoke, Skylar began to speak "Melody?" I looked over to her. "Yeah?"

"You know, she is our best friend too. We miss her as much as you do. Sure you two were always closer, but I guess it has to do with the fact that you know each other since 18 years. And us only for five. And we all know that Jessica don't want us to stop playing at JayO's and reach our goal. Melody. You know we can make it." I watched her silently and nodded. "Yeah," I sighed and run frustrated a hand through my hair "...your right."

I sat up, so my back was pressed against the headboard of my bed.  "Come here," said Alex, and patted the place next to him on the couch. I rolled my eyes and stood up.

Sitting down I turned to Alex "So what should we do?Do we play on Saturday?" He nodded and Sky answered "Yeah. We should. I think we just play a few acoustic versions, so we don't need a bass. We'll look what we do about the missing member next week, okay? I mean, that's when our senior year begins." She grinned. I sighed and nodded "Okay."

"I think I know which song we could play." My mind was already searching for the perfect song to sing, to built connection to Jessica. I smiled. Maybe attending the gig, even without her wouldn't be so bad. Of course, something will be missing on Saturday, but maybe I can lose myself in music once again and blend all my surroundings out, so it's just me and music.

"So this song is called 18 years by Daughtry. I dedicate this song to our best friend, who left for college this week. We wish her the best." Adjusting my acoustic guitar, I began to play and hummed the familiar tune.

(A/N: The rights for the following lyrics go to the rightful songwriter and musical artist. I don't own any credits for it!)

"Sit down with an old friend

Like time it never stopped

From the cradle to the coffin

We drink until we drop

Yeah, we grew up on the same street

small town under the hill, yeah

But dreams get lost and buried down

Deep inside the soil there, yeah"

Closing my eyes and smiling slightly I continued.Already beginning to lose myself in the beautiful melody.

"All day all night

Keep pressing rewind

All day all night

I remember

All day all night

Keep pressing rewind

All day all night I remember"

The lyrics reminded me of all the nights me and the guys played together. If it was in my garage or here at JayO's, it had always been the same. We were Broken Silence, we were a family. I thought about the nights Jessica stayed up with me and helped me through tough phrases, or just watched movies with me and had a sleepover. She was and still is the best friend a person could wish for.

"We were young, we were wild

We were halfway free

We were kids on the run

On a dead-end street

Looking back in the rear view mirror

You know the view used to be much clearer

But we'll laugh and we'll cry

Till there's no more tears

And tonight can we just hold on to those 18 years

18 years"

I've known her for 18 years. And even if she's on the other side of the country, she will always be the person closest to me.
