3- Cecil

Once we got home, I tried walking to my room so I could text Hannah. My parents were arguing about some minuscule topic. I think it was the piece of art my mother wanted to hang above their bed. It had nothing to do with me, so I thought I could slip away into my room. As I walked towards my little sanctuary, my father called out my name.

"Oh, Cecilia, can you come back here for a moment?"My mother called out, using my full name. I froze in my tracks. I was so close. Both of my parents had gone silent and stared at me as I walked back toward the dining room table, where they sat. My mother had her hands crossed in front of her, a definite sign of danger. Something was wrong, but I couldn't think of anything I had done to break a rule or upset them.

It was my father that spoke up and broke the silence.  "Cecilia, your mother and I have been talking, and we have realized that you have been neglecting your acquaintances in lieu of getting better grades."

 Crap

My parents are very powerful, rich people and they forced me into 'friendship' with some of the other rich kids around. I was supposed to hang out with them, display our alliance, and charm them into whatever my parents wanted. All of these kids are spoiled, rich trash. Lately, I have been ignoring them and using various excuses to escape spending time with them. Studying is an excellent excuse that could get me out of almost anything.

"You know that while we value your grades, your relationships are very important to us. We would like you to continue being around them." I knew this would happen. Well, freedom was nice while it lasted. But my father wasn't done talking yet. He almost never was. I held my breath as my father continued to drabble on. "In addition to this, we would like you to start a romantic relationship with one of the children."

I actually felt all the oxygen leave the room.

No.

I can't do that. They can't do that to me. I stand there, shell-shocked, as my mother continues talking.

"We were thinking that Robert Harlow, the son of the winemakers, would be a nice choice. We have talked to his parents and have come to the conclusion that this would be an excellent idea."

I can't breathe.  They talked and decided this before. My parents went up to the Harlow's house, sat down, and decided my future.

"That's all we have for you. Now you can go about your day."

I couldn't speak as my parents dismissed me. All I could do was walk to my room, close the door, and sit on my bed. My parents have used me as a pawn before, but this is a new low. As I lied on my bed, all I was thinking about was what my parents had told the Harlows, and how  Robert was going play this on Monday.

As I drift off to sleep, I vaguely remembered I forgot to text Hannah.
