"Hey, [Name], hurry up and serve the orders!" your boss yelled.
"Right, sorry!"
You hurriedly gathered the plates of food and the plentifully filled cups onto your tray before rushing out to the tables. Luckily, today's customers were in a forgiving mood as you passed their respective orders to them and apologized for being late. You were pleasantly surprised to see that the last person you served was your best friend, Era.
"Hey, [Name]!" she greeted enthusiastically. "You keeping up with your work?"
"More or less," you replied with a nervous chuckle.
Era grinned knowingly, then patted the chair beside her. "Have a seat. You look like you could use a break."
"I don't know..." Instinctively, your gaze swept side to side. "I might get in trouble again."
"Oh, come on. I'm a customer, and I'm asking you to serve me by taking a moment to sit with me! Besides, I'm trying to help you clear your head enough to do your job properly."
You bit your lip in contemplation and glanced over your shoulder toward where the kitchens were. The other two waitresses looked as if they would do fine without you. Surely just a few minutes couldn't hurt... You turned back to your friend and hesitantly sat down. Meanwhile, Era smiled triumphantly and took a sip of water.
"Now," she began. "What's on our little daydreamer's mind today?"
Grinning at her energy, you simply shrugged, causing Era to pout immediately.
"[Nickname], you know you can tell me anythiiiing!"
"Yeah, I know. But I'm not entirely sure what's bothering me either."
The girl leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. "Hnn, I bet it's those dreams of yours again. It's always the dreams."
"Not always," you protested.
Era raised a brow and gave you a pointed look, causing you to sink guiltily into your seat.
"Okay, maybe always... But I can barely remember any of them! Why do they bother me so much?"
She tapped her chin thoughtfully and hummed. "Maybe they're a sign. Maybe your dreams are trying to tell you something."
"Like what?" you questioned with a scoff.
"Probably something to do with your past. You can't remember anything from before you arrived to our town, right? So maybe your dreams are trying to help you regain your memories."
"I doubt it. All they ever show me is a boy with yellow eyes."
"Well, maybe remembering that boy is the key!" Era exclaimed, pointing a confident finger at your face. "He must be really important to you and your past!"
"Whatever," you muttered with a sigh. "It's not like it matters anyway. Even if anything that you're saying turned out to be true, I hardly remember anything about him. He's always covered in darkness, and whenever I do manage to get a glimpse of his face, I forget what he looks like the moment I wake up."
"Oh, don't be such a pessimist," your friend chided as she took another sip of water. "I'm sure that if you saw the guy, you'd know it was him."
You let out another sigh and rested your head against a propped up palm. "Maybe..."
Suddenly, your boss burst through the kitchen door, his eyes scanning over the room until they landed on you. "[Name], stop lazing about and get back to work!"
"Yes, sir!" You jumped out of your chair and picked up your tray. "I'll talk with you more later, Era."
"I'll hold you to that," she replied with a grin. "Good luck! Don't daydream too much!"
"I'll try!"
As you made your way back to the kitchen, you couldn't help but think about what Era had told you. What if she really was right? What if your dreams were trying to tell you something? Were you really supposed to find that boy? If so, then you better keep a look out for the one thing that you did remember about him: his piercing, golden eyes.
