'Howl' is widely regarded as the best werewolf picture since 'An American Werewolf In London.' British independent horror film set aboard a commuter train stuck in the middle of the night in an area full of murderous creatures. It's a nice piece of entertainment, although it is a simple horror movie, so do not expect much from the story or characters.
Although there was probably an opportunity here to do something different with the werewolf genre the script is quite a formula led. For a start, if you find yourself outside of the train for some reason and you hear strange voices coming from the spooky dark forest, DON'T go to investigate. You already know werewolves are out there! And please don't announce your arrival by shouting "Is there anybody out there?"
However, there is a positive note here. The creature makeup is superb particularly from an independent production company, in this case, Starchild Pictures.
Not any noticeable dodgy CGI in sight. In fact, the make-up and prosthetics are carried out by the best in the industry with the likes of Steven Byrens and Rachel Coenen.
Also, all the actors involved play it straight and it's a fairly young cast with some up and coming actors to watch such as Sam Gittins who plays the role of Billy and Ed Speleers who plays our hero Joe.
Talking about the crunch, the besieged passengers are surprisingly eager and capable with their makeshift weapons, a refreshing change from the norm in such situations in horror films, and Hyett's background and experience mean that the actual werewolves are impressive for such a low-budget production.
