"Are you sure it's okay to stay at your place? I mean because your parents and all.."
I put down Jack's bags and look him straight in the eye.
"Jack, your house burned down and you have no other family to stay with I'm sure they'll understand."
Since Jack will be staying in my room for the next couple of months or possibly years, I have to explain to my parents that Jack is basically part of the family now. Oh gosh does that mean Jack and I have to sleep in the same bed? I turn red at the thought. No way that's too.. weird. I shake my head and help Jack unpack his bags.
"So this is everything they could save from the fire?" I ask
He nods his head and stays quiet. I understand why so I don't say anything. I continue to unpack to keep my mind off of the event and I come across an old picture frame. The glass is cracked all over but the picture is safe. I carefully remove the picture from the frame and examine it. It's of two young children holding hands. Could it be his sister Jane and him? I decide to ask him later and slip the picture into my pocket. Suddenly I hear a knock at my door, and I look up abruptly. It's dad.
"What are you too love birds doing in a room by yourselves? Pim, you know what I told you about this."
I nod and explain to him what happened to Jack. His eyes go wide and he clears his throat.
"Wow.. um Jack I'm so sorr-"
"It's fine" Jack says
I frown at Jack's tone. His voice is very raspy and choked up, probably from all of that crying.
"Jack when do we get to see your sister at the hospital?" I say trying to get Jack's mind off of the subject
"This weekend."
"That's good"
"Splendid." Jack murmurs and leaves the room angrily
I quickly chase after him and so does dad.
"Dad it's okay, I got this."
He nods and I follow Jack outside. I see him sitting out on the patio and I sit beside him. I sigh.
"Would you look at that."
I point at the night sky
"Isn't it beautiful?" I smile, looking at him.
He frowns, looking away.
"You know..your parents are up there, watching over you."
"They probably hate me." I hear him choke out.
I stare at him confused.
"Jack, what are you saying?"
He takes a cancer stick from his pocket, lighting it then bringing it too his chapped lips. Slowly, he takes a puff and sighs.
"I don't think you should be smok-"
I'm cut off by a laugh. His laugh.
"They got hurt because of me. I couldn't save them."
I stay silent and let him talk.
"It was that girl.. she screwed me up! Sh-she hurt my family.. hell, if I ever see her again I swear on my life I'll-"
"Wait, wait, Jack can you see that?"
I point towards the far end of the street.
"Pim, have you even been listening to me?"
"Just look."
It's the shadowy image from before, except it seemed to be moving.. towards us? Jack and I watch the object cautiously as it nears us. Eventually it reaches our doorstep. I swallow nervously, my heart beating erratically. Now the object is in front of us, except it's a person not an object. The person is wearing a long, dark robe with a hood and a mask so that we can't see its face.
After what seems like several minutes of silence, Jack finally speaks up.
"Monica.. leave now. We don't want you here"
Monica? I tried to think back about what Jack told me about his previous girlfriends and his family members but a 'Monica' doesn't seem to cross my mind. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Suddenly, Monica takes a step forward, now face to face with Jack, and slowly, she removes her mask.
"Long time no see."
