Kim had trained his whole life, trying to be the one prophesied to save the world from the Darkness that was slowly consuming the world. All his friends didn't want that title. They were all so sure it would be him, and they were all happy to support him, and follow his lead in battle.
Which was why he was kind of pissed at the fact that this little refugee girl was trying to top him in everything.
Alix could tie with him in almost everything, besides speed races (if they let her use her rollerblades, she'd win every time) and climbing (whether it was a tree or a mountain, Kim could often get to handholds she couldn't reach) and it was annoying. Besides those two things, Alix was his perfect equal. She could match him for endurance, strength, and any type of weapon.
Besides the fact that she kept tying with him in literally everything, Kim also hated the way Alix had no real allegiance to the cause. He wouldn't have minded having a little competition, but Alix was competitive for the wrong reasons. She didn't care about saving the world. She tied with him in everything because she wanted to prove she could; not because she wanted to be the chosen one or save the world.
It was a normal day when alarms blared.
"What's going on?" Rose squeaked.
"The Darkness is getting too close," Mrs. Bustier said calmly, "We have about twenty-four hours to evacuate."
"Alright, people, you heard her!" Kim yelled, "Marinette, Adrien, Chloe, Mylene and Ivan! Go pack everyone's personal stuff!"
"Yes, Sir!"
"Max and Sabrina! Go load all the tech on the trucks!"
"Got it!"
"Alya and Nino! Go grab all the food!"
"On it!"
"Nathaniel, Rose, and Juleka! Get the weapons!"
"Right away!"
"And Alix..."
"Don't tell me what to do," Alix said, skating away.
Kim followed her, slightly annoyed at the fact that he had to jog to keep up with her.
"Everyone has to help with the evacuation," he explained, "I know the last time we moved was a six months ago, and you weren't here, but you still have to help with this one."
"I know," Alix said simply, "And in your infinite wisdom, you neglected to tell anyone to go grab the animals. The horses don't deserve to die any more than we do, and we kind of need the cows and chickens to survive. I could use some help getting them on the transport carts."
Kim huffed. He had forgotten about the animals. Not that he'd admit that to Alix.
"Fine," He said, "Go on without me. I'll grab Lila, Kagami, and Luka and meet you there."
"Great," Alix skated towards the stables at top speed.
...
Who did Kim think he was? He always acted like he was their undisputed leader. As if he was automatically the chosen one.
Not that Alix wanted that title for herself. No way. She was perfectly content to keep doing her own thing. Not following orders, but not giving them, either.
Alix knew that twenty-four hours should be more than enough time to get out of range of the Darkness. She shouldn't have any trouble getting the animals out in time.
Still... she could see it from the paddock where the horses were. The wall of blackness, stretching high as the eye could see, slowly advancing on their position. No one who went in there survived. Or, they might have survived, but no one knew; no one ever came back out.
Alix had already lost her entire family to it. As indifferent as she pretended to be, she knew she couldn't afford to lose the people in this refugee camp too. Over the past four months since she had come here, she had come to like them all, even Kim.
Except Lila. Nobody liked that compulsive-lying little bitch.
Alix grabbed the halter of her favorite horse, Raven, first and guided her into the cart attached to the back of a truck.
She went down the list of her favorite horses like this, Wolf, Spirit, getting as far as Robin before Kim got there, with Luka, Lila, and Kagami in tow.
"Took you long enough," Alix muttered.
"Somebody wasn't where she should've been," Kim muttered, shooting a glare Lila's way.
They got the rest of the eleven horses on the carts, then the six cows and started loading the chickens into crates.
Alix felt kind of bad for those chickens as she crammed them into the crates. They didn't have nearly enough of the small, cage-like boxes. But, she supposed it was better squished than dead, and they'd let them out again when they got to the new camp.
All that, (one of the cows escaped and had to be chased until they finally caught her) took them six hours. Eighteen left, and Max and Sabrina still weren't completely done with backing up the data on the computers. They assured everyone else that it would be another hour at least.
Alya and Nino were almost done with packing up all the food, so maybe fifteen minutes there, but Alix decided to relax in the branches of her favorite tree.
Kim climbed up to join her, "You okay?"
"Why do you care?" She asked.
"Cause you're still one of the last humans, even if you're annoying."
Alix shrugged, "Why would you think I'm not okay?"
Kim stared her down. God that stare was intense.
"I saw you go pale every time you looked at the Darkness. What's the story with that?"
Alix took a deep breath, "The story is that it's none of your business."
"We have eighteen hours to get out of here," Kim told her, "You've got plenty of time to change your mind if you want."
However, of course their luck couldn't be that good.
Alix looked towards the Darkness, "Wait. Kim, does that look... closer than it should be to you?"
Kim pulled out some binoculars, "Shit. You're right." He called down, "Everyone, get in the trucks! The Darkness has gotten faster! I'd estimate we have about two hours to get out of here, now! Everyone needs to be ready by that time!"
"Sabrina and Max aren't done!" Alya protested.
"Alya, you're good with tech!" Kim called, "Go help them."
Alya ran for the computer room, and everyone else started loading onto the trucks.
"What should I do?" Alix asked.
"Oh, now you'll listen to orders?"
"At the moment, I have nothing better to do."
"Then get your ass on a truck and be ready to go," Kim said before yelling, "Hey Marinette! Go ride with the horses! Try to keep them calm!"
"Nuh-uh," Alix said, "I'm not just leaving. We both know I'm your strongest asset here; use me."
Kim sighed, "Fine. Go and be ready to help lift the computers. There's no way those three can carry all that by themselves."
"That, I can do."
Alix ran to the computer room.
...
It took too long, and the Darkness got too close, but Kim eventually saw Alix skating as fast as she could towards the only truck with spare cargo space, hauling a monitor. She kept going back for more, and the Darkness got closer. It was right outside the door now.
"Alix, hurry!" He yelled. He couldn't go help her. He had people and animals in the trucks to worry about. Still, he waved at them all to start going, besides the one Alix was hurrying to help get computer parts into. She was fast. For once, he was glad that she could move faster than he could on those roller blades.
Finally, Max, Alya, and Sabrina ran out and crammed into the tech truck, and Alix skated to Kim's truck, pulling herself into the passenger seat.
"Drive!" She ordered.
That was one order he was fine with following, and he drove as fast as he could, heading onto the road.
The Darkness kept getting closer. It seemed to be gaining speed. It seemed... angry.
"Go faster!" Alix ordered anxiously.
"I can only go so fast with so much cargo!" He retorted, "No one likes a backseat driver, Alix! If I go too fast—."
In a flash, Alix kicked her leg over and slammed on the gas, making them rocket forward—as the cart behind them fell behind, the ropes severed.
Kim glared at her, "That happens."
Alix gave him a stink eye, "Keep going, but stay slow."
She opened the passenger-side door and jumped out, landing on her feet and skating back for the cart.
"Rose, take the wheel!" Kim ordered.
"What?!"
Rose lunged forward as Kim opened the door to jump out.
"What are you thinking?" Rose yelled.
"I have to help her!" Kim called, "Stay slow, but keep going!"
Kim ran back to where Alix was struggling with the cart. He was impressed by the fact that she had dragged it a few inches, but there was no way she'd be able to get it there in time.
"Take the back!" Kim ordered, "I'll pull the front."
"I can do this!" Alix protested, not moving as together, they managed to get the cart moving.
"No, you can't!" Kim argued, "Just go back and push! You can't do this alone!"
Alix went to the back, and they managed to get going a little faster, but it was still slow and it took all of their effort.
Suddenly, Kim spotted Marinette, Adrien, and Lila running back towards them.
"I thought I told you to go!" He groaned.
"You'll never make it alone!" Adrien pointed out.
With all three of their help, the cart moved a little faster, but they still couldn't get it moving fast enough, and the Darkness was getting dangerously close, only a few feet away.
"Screw this!" Alix exclaimed suddenly, pulling out a switchblade and cutting the locks. She swung up on a horse and motioned for the others to do the same. "Come on!"
The others swung up on horses, with Adrien and Marinette sharing one.
Kim thought they were home free as they all galloped away from the Darkness, but Lila's horse spooked, throwing her. He saw her leg, which was bent at an awkward angle. She wouldn't be able to even run.
Lila was a bitch, and Kim knew he couldn't get to her in time. He figured they had better cut their losses.
But then Alix pulled up, turning around and racing back towards the injured Lila.
"Alix, no!" He shouted, "You'll never make it!"
But Alix kept going, galloping towards Lila.
...
Alix had no idea why she was going back for Lila. But she couldn't stop. She raced back as fast as Raven could go, not letting her eyes leave Lila's terrified face.
She reached her right after the Darkness did.
Alix tried to pull up, but she couldn't turn in time. She was headed straight for the Darkness.
Alix put her hands up in front of her face to shield herself from whatever was coming.
As her fingertips connected with the Darkness, light burst from her hands, driving it back.
The Darkness made a sound that sounded like an angry shriek, and then it stopped moving at all. It just stayed where it was, no longer advancing.
Alix had no idea what had just happened, but she wasn't waiting around to find out.
She raced back towards where Kim was waiting for her.
