MC's POV

As soon as I heard the front door shut, I stood up and started looking around the room. I had approximately an hour before Ruby came back and I needed to find my phone. As I was searching, I found a hidden compartment in the bed frame, not much bigger than my hand. I reached in and, to my surprise, found a key chain with a few small keys on it. Could these. . . No way! I pulled myself up, slowly, ignoring the pain surging through my body. I started walking to the door when I noticed something in the mirror. I needed to cover myself up more. Marks ran down my neck and arms. I opened the dresser below the mirror, and found a few sweaters. I pulled one over my head and grabbed the scarf that was on the dresser. I stumbled the rest of the way to the door on my weak legs. I fumbled each key into the lock until I found the right one and stepped out the room. One of these had to be for the front door, right? I slowly, walked down the stairs, pain running through my legs. I felt of sense of dread. Should I do this? What if Ruby found out? What would he do to me. . . to Alice? I shook my head and slowly walked to the front door, and experimented with the different keys. Before I left, I looked at the clock. Half an hour. I need to be back before then. Was it enough time? The second I opened the door, freezing air blasted in my face. The bite of the wind, the blinding light of the sun, the deafening sounds of the people and cars, all meant one thing. Freedom. A multitude of emotions ran through me. Happiness, excitement, vigour, eagerness. . . Fear? I looked back at the door. Staring into the "home" that has served as my prison. Why? I was free at last! I could have walk away and. . . no. I knew the truth. True freedom was too far out of my reach. Sure, I could leave for a while, whenever he left. Even then, if I told anyone. He would- A shiver ran up my spine as the thought of Alice went through my head. I pulled the scarf up and started to walk to the coffee shop, the cold air offering to numb the pain in my lower body.

The bell startled me as I walked in, has it really been that long? A pair of hands covered my eyes from behind causing me to tense up. I only relaxed as I heard a familiar voice say,

"Guess who!"

"Alice?" He uncovered my eyes and I turned around. Looking at his being, his face, I felt comfort and hope.

"Sorry if I scared you. I just wanted to cheer you up, you looked so upset. Is everything. . .Okay?"

"Can we sit down first?" I muttered under my breath.

"Huh? Oh yeah! I have a table over here." I flinched as he grabbed my bruised wrist. Luckily, my sleeve didn't roll up. The relief and comfort I felt was instantly replaced by panic as Alice asked, "So what's up? You haven't responded to any of my messages or calls for the past month. Have you been. . . avoiding me?"

"Oh. . . No! I just-" This is it! I could tell him everything right now and it all can be over! "It's just that. . . I need-" I suddenly stopped as I looked at my swollen ankles. How could I be so selfish? If I had dragged Alice into this, Ruby would- I shook my head and looked up into Alice's eyes. A feeling of sadness rushed through my body.

"You need what?"

"Um. . . I need-" His face turned from expentant to worried as he caught on.

"Is this about Ruby? Is he hurting you? Do you need help? I can-"

I abruptly stood up and said, "I need to go!" louder than I anticipated. I needed to get out of there right then! I rushed out the door leaving Alice sitting at the table. Did he follow me? Probably. I ran through different streets to try and lose him. Finally, I made it back to the prison. A free bird, flying back into its cage once more. I stumbled inside, my legs giving out on me, gasping for air. My stomach dropped as I heard the door slam and lock behind me. Turning around to see him. Ruby was sitting in a chair near the door.
