'Stupid keke drivers,' Kainye cursed as he narrowly avoided running into one of the yellow keke napeps on the Okporo road.
His eyes were dark with supressed anger and his forehead creased in a frown. They were returning from the 50th birthday party of one of his business partners on RD road. Izigora sat quietly, unconsciously leaning into the door, her stance that of a person ready to jump out of the vehicle if need be and she hoped it wouldn't come to that.
He had accused her of flirting simply because he had bought her a beautiful dress and matching accessories. What was her offence? She had smiled while greeting and responding to the greetings of his friends at the party. And then one of them had held her hand and teased Kainye about snatching her away from him if he didn't take care.
The man had been clearly joking but Kainye's face had immediately changed, his dark eyes throwing darts at the younger man who immediately freed her hand and walked away like a scolded puppy with his tail between his hind legs. Izigora figured that a man who was used to taking other men's women wouldn't take lightly the hint of another man taking what was his.
The party had continued but she had been most uncomfortable, wanting to just go home and cook for her husband before she got into trouble. Kainye rarely ate outside the house and that meant that no matter what time they left the party she would be required to get into the kitchen and prepare his meals. They had a meal time table for each week which he printed straight from work every Friday. These meals had to be freshly cooked. Innovative cooking was not permitted! After all, how dared she show that she had more culinary skills than his mother?
And so, the keke napep drivers were not helping her ministry at all by getting Kainye angry. He had left the party in a good spirit after receiving a call that the foreign company he had been seeking to do business with in the last three months, had finally sent a contract to him for his input and execution.
She silently prayed that we would make it home in one piece. But just as she was concluding that prayer a loud screeching sound had her opening her eyes once more and then the unmistakable sound of metal scratching against metal greeted her ears.
Oh God, no! Izigora thought.
'What the hell!' Kainye swore as he pulled to a stop in the centre of the road.
Next thing I knew he was out of the car and a short dark-skinned man was thrown against the bonnet of their car. It was like watching a foreign movie. He had literally dragged the shocked man out of the keke and lifting him off his short legs slammed him on the bonnet!
'Oga abeg,' the man pleaded. 'Na devil cause am o.'
'Kitipa tabikwa gi onu!' Kainye cursed at the man. 'Thunder from Sango and Amadioha combined fire you and your family a million times!'
A crowd was beginning to gather and the cars behind them were blaring their horns impatiently.
'Foolish man, park your car well and settle your problem. We all have places to be,' the driver of the red Honda Element behind them stuck out his head to call out.
