Jerome's POV
Chemistry went as horrible as always. I think I understand it less now, Mrs. Carlton always seems to confuse me. Plus Erin was being annoying as ever. She kept trying to whisper something to me, I just pretended like I didn't hear her.
Mrs. Carlton dismisses the class as she sits back down in her chair. The class does the opposite and gets up from their chairs. Several students crowd the doorway trying to get out into the hallway. I was one of the last out but I didn't mind.
As I take my first step out into the hallway I accidentally drop my pencil. I look down to pick it up when I bump into someone's back. I look up to see that Mitch guy looking down at me. I stand up straight waiting for some sort of insult but the complete opposite happened.
"Sorry, Jerome." he says.
"For what?" I say kind of confused of the fact that I haven't been punched yet.
"About that note Tyde threw at you. He can be a real jerk sometimes." he scoffs.
"O-Oh okay.." I reply unsure still if this is a trick.
"Well uh, see you around?" his voice cracks a bit, as he scratches his neck.
"Okay, sure. Yeah see you around." I answer as he nods and turns to walk away.
What was that? Why was he being so nice to me? How does he even know me? I barely know him!
So many questions were bouncing around in my head. But seriously what the heck just happened.
I shook my head and brought my self back into reality. I bend down once again to pick up my fallen pencil. Then, I continue through the hall to my next class, Latin Excel.
**
Latin was actually pretty fun. Usually I don't really care for it but we played sort of a game show kind of deal thing. Well anyways I have Lexi in that class so I talked to her for a short while. When class was over Lexi walked me to the cafeteria for First Lunch.
"So Jerome, find anyone to tutor you in Chemistry yet?" she asked me as we walk through the hall together.
"I don't think I ever will to be honest." I sigh.
"Have you ever tried looking at the top students list and asking for their help?" she suggests.
"Pft, that will never work--," I stop myself. "Wait, that could actually work! Lexi! You're a genius!" I turn to her and put both hands on her shoulders.
"Yeah I think we already knew that." she smiles.
"Hey! Where you going?!" she shouts after me waving her arms as I run the opposite way.
"I'm gonna find me a tutor!" I yell without looking back.
***
"Mrs. Carlton!" I huff out of breath from running.
She looks up from her papers and gives a squint as if she can't see clearly.
"Jerome? What can I help you with? And why are you so out of breath?" she asks.
"I-I," I try to regain my breath.
I take in one big breath,"Iwaswonderingificouldtakealookatthehighestgradestomaybefindmeatutor."
"I don't speak Gibberish, slow down!" she tells me with that same rosy smile of hers.
"I was wondering if I could take a look at the highest grades to maybe find me a tutor." I say extra slow, not really wanting to say it again.
"Oh! Well, they are going to be posted tomorrow morning if you want to wait until then." she informs me.
"Can I see them now." I eagerly request.
"If you insist." she gives in and hands me a laminated list of students.
It read all seventeen names of kids in my Chemistry class.
It started from the worst for some reason...
17) Claire Monet - Average of 56
16) Daniel Starr - Average of 58
15) Eleanor Bevin - Average of 58
14) Jerome Aceti - Average of 61
Yep, there I am....
13) Tyde Kennedy - Average of 63
12) Luke Hock - Average of 67
11) Erin Goodwin - Average of 69
10) Alex Monroe - Average of 70
9) Abigail Essex - Average of 72
8) Connor Saleen - Average of 72
7) Chris Backning - Average of 74
6) Tara Felding - Average of 78
5) Maya Bernier - Average of 83
4) Adam Kruger - Average of 84
3) Tamia Dalpheen - Average of 87
2) Emily-Rose Michele - Average of 93
1) Mitchell Hughes - Average of 97
Wait what?
"1) Mitchell Hughes - Average of 97" I read aloud to myself in total and complete disbelief.
I walk up to Mrs. Carlton's desk and she looks up.
"This has to be a mistake," I tell her pointing to number one.
She takes the list and adjusts her glasses on her nose. She puts the paper down and smiles.
"Oh no sweetie, there's no mistake. Mitchell is my best student! He has been ever since the first quarter!"
"You've got to be joking." I laugh, hoping it was a joke.
"Nope! Maybe you should talk to Mitchell sometime, he's a very sweet kid. He could possibly help or tutor you in Chemistry!" she elbows me.
She makes him sound like an Angel of some sort. I bet he's far from it. From who he hangs around with I can already tell he's pretty much a jerk.
I still can't understand how he gets better grades than me, I mean, I know I am horrible at Chemistry but still! Chemistry makes more sense to me than why he has the highest grades in the class!
I'm not asking him for help, period.
