The night is still young and cold. A young village boy, about the age of 15 sat by the river. He looked up into the dark night sky, the stars were forming into pictures and the moon shined unto the river like how a sun shine unto metals. He laid down unto the grass and wonder, Will I ever get the chance to go outside and see the world, as he tries to reach for the stars. He loves the village, it is peaceful yet a danger from nobles, but he also wanted to see the world outside his village. He knew that it is a dangerous world outside the gates of the village. He had heard stories passed down from his ancestors about creatures that would capture humans, and deprive the humans of their life, for they feed on the life of living creatures, mostly humans of course. He knew that thirty miles from the village lies a mansion where a rich guy live. He would sent his people to come come to his village every once a week to find someone to feed their life to the creatures they were trying to train. The last time they came, they took a mother's child, they ripped the child away from her and he was never seen again. The mother later fell ill and die. He closed his eyes, When will this ever end, his thoughts were restless, but eventually he drifted asleep.
Morning rose over the village. Villagers are starting to wake up and start their morning routines. Farmers were tending their crops and livestock. The boy had just been woken up by the rooster's alarming voice. He walked back to the village, still thinking, When will this ever end. He reached the front of his house and the door swung open. A woman, late in her thirties, came out.
"And where have you been last night?" she told him, in a tone that would make your spine go through a chill.
"Ummm, I...slept...by... the...river..?" he said skipping each word by a second. The women sigh and she hugged him, "Oh my dear Huoyan, why would you sleep there, you would have gotten ill from the chills of the night," she said in a worried tone.
"I'm sorry mom, I didn't mean to worry you," he hugged her back.
"It's ok, as long as you're safe. Oh!and would you mind going back to the river and filled the bucket with water, your brother and father had both fallen ill last night and they need clean water." She gave him two buckets and a board. The wood had a hook at the end of it and she placed the bucket at each of the end of the wooden boards.
"Okay," he replied back.He walked toward the river and look unto it. Now the sun is shining on it, just like how the moon did, but brighter this time. He leaned down and started to fill each of the bucket with water. "Hey Huoyan!," someone yelled. He turned around and saw his best friend Fang. His friend, Kizu, is the son of the villager's leader.
"Hey Kizu, what are you doing out here?," he asked. "Well getting fresh water for the villagers. My father said we needed freshwater, so I came here and volunteer," he replied with a bright smile.
" I just came here for some water for my family, since my father is ill and so is brother and mother is doing housework." he sighed.
Huoyan and kizu had been friends since Huoyan showed up in the village.
"Hey Huoyan, remember the time when you and I tried sneaking out of the gate, but was caught later ," he laughed as he filled some of his bucket with water.
"Yeah, and remember how you tried to be your father one time by wearing his clothes and tried to hold a ceremony for the villagers," Huoyan laughed.
"Those were the good times," Kizu looks down at one of the empty buckets.
"Well, let's head back now," Kizu replied while filling in the last empty bucket with water and he loaded it onto a wagon. Kizu entered to the center of the village where he empty the bucket of water into the well for some villagers that couldn't travel up to the river while Huoyan returned back to his house.
