Butler and Artemis were standing in the kitchen together. Artemis Sr. and Angeline had just left for a vacation in Paris, and Juliet was outside. Butler looked to make sure everyone was gone. "I think we're finally alone." He looked at the pale boy in front of him and smiled slightly.

"Finally." Artemis replied, with a smile of his own.

Butler leaned down and claimed Artemis' lips with his own for the first time in days that felt like years. He rested his hands on the boy's waist and relaxed, which was a rarity. He may have relaxed a bit too much, however, because he didn't hear the sound of heels clicking towards the kitchen. He did hear the scream that followed them.

"What on Earth is going on here?!" They jumped and looked at the door to see Angeline Fowl, wide eyed and mouth agape in shock.

"Mother, I can expl-"

"I came back to get my purse, which I forgot because you were rushing me out the door, and find this! Is this why you wanted me gone so badly?!"

"It's not- Okay, it's exactly what it looks like. But I'm eighteen now and I think I am capable of deciding who I want to kiss and-" He was stopped by a finger held up by his mother.

"Arty, I know how old you are. There is no need to get so defensive. I'm just a bit surprised to walk into my kitchen and see my son kissing his bodyguard, as I'm sure you can imagine." She sighed, then walked over and hugged Artemis. "At least I don't have to do a background check on him." She smiled at them, then directed her attention to Butler. "If you do anything to hurt him, not only will you be fired, but you will be blacklisted and never be able to work again." She said in her sweetest voice.

Butler nodded, eyes barely widening. "Yes, ma'am." Somehow, he would rather fight a troll than be spoken to in that tone by Artemis' mother.

"Good." She hugged Artemis again. "Goodbye, dear. Try to stay out of trouble." She kissed his forehead, then grabbed her purse and left.

Artemis and Butler looked at eachother and smiled.
