Chapter One: My Favorite Part of the Day
-
Harper's point of view.
**********
This is without a doubt the part of my daily life that I love the most.
Before I start describing this scene that most can only dream about, let me give you some essential background information: my brother and I are popular.
Now, don't get any fake ideas. I'm not your typical cheerleader at your local high school, dragging along her puppy dog boyfriend and her hundreds of fake minion friends. And my brother is certainly not the oh so wanted bad boy, girl's man.
No.
My brother and I are way more than that. We are "The Queen and King", "The Rulers of the School", "The Creators of All Democracy".
We are "The Ash and The Harper".
Okay, now I may proceed in telling you my all time favorite part of the day: walking into school.
As we gracefully get out of our shared sleek silver BMW and confidently make our way towards the school's entrance, I flick my dark black hair over my shoulder and plaster a radiant smile on my face that I know will melt the insides of too many dumb boys.

A crowd is already forming around us, and I throw a wink at my equally eager twin.
High-pitched murmurs of "god, his muscles" and "did you see that twinkle in his beautiful eyes?" make Ash turn towards the female population of Bradton High and smile flirtatiously, which earns him a general sigh of contentment, as if he had just made their day (which he probably did). Ash is such a player: every week he has a new date, who gets dumped after a few satisfactory nights for him.
Although I could easily be as successful as my brother (the envious glances I'm getting now from too many perverted guys is the proof), my crush on Jimmy Hole, an extremely handsome, smart, and helpful school soccer player prevents me from enjoying the kind of entertainments Ash frequents.
I have loved him since forever, and why shouldn't I? He's perfect.
Bushy light brown hair and glittering green eyes, nothing more could be asked. Each time I have a problem, he rescues me, asking nothing in return. Plus, if he went out with me, instead of that bitchy Quinn Dot (who in no way outshines my popularity, by the way, I mean who can with a name like that?), he wouldn't spoil my popularity too much because he's only a couple ranks beneath Ash and I.
It's as if I, the queen, married a duke! That's alright, isn't it?
My eyes refocus as to enjoy the moment: hundreds of eyes jealously staring at my green-eyed black-haired fair-skinned beauty, devouring my near presence. I close my eyes, and sigh with a smile on my face. This is where I belong, this is where my future will head: in the center of a crowd.
I open my eyes again as I hear hushed yet excited murmurs. Ready to smile and wave at my numerous fans, I am unpleasantly surprised to see that the murmurs are not about me nor about my brother. The eagerness-filled faces are all turned towards the blue school gates again, and when I turn as well to see what the focus of such attention is, and see an all too familiar face, forcefully forgotten in the dark corners of my memory, my blood freezes and I cringe.
Noah Woodson is back, and my downfall has come with him.
