I wake up, slightly earlier than the others, and look at the row of seven beds - Ginger, Amber, Ivy, Skye, Stella, Violet and Rose are sleeping peacefully. It was not long before the alarm went off, so I got up in an intention to make everyone some French toast and hot chocolate. Ivy got up next and I could hear her plodding loudly down the stairs to the kitchen. She sat at the breakfast bar and stares at the quite empty roads. This is what she usually does in the morning, if she's tired. Ginger appears in the doorway. "Ginger, do you want to go and ask mum if she wants breakfast?" I ask. She turns and walks back upstairs. "Thanks" I call. "Thanks should be an understatement, I just got up!" I hear her yell back at me. Ivy finally walks over to the growing line of plates and mugs. "Do you want me to wake them up?" She asks. "Thanks." She runs upstairs and I hear her yelling "Alright, you lot, Mistress says you need to get up now. Breakfast is ready, it's watery porridge. After you finish, it's marching around the house for exercise and then your chores, homework and then you must help with lunch - wrinkly peas, runny mashed pumpkin and corn mush. Chop chop, you lazy bunch!" I burst out laughing. Ivy can have a very good sense of humour when she wants it. Soon enough, four girls come trailing into the kitchen. Amber walks in. "Mum isn't here - she must've gone for one of her walks." I sigh. She gets migraines just less than often, and walks seem to cure anything. But that wasn't the answer.
About an hour later, and mum still hasn't come home. Then we hear the doorbell ring. I run to the door, and it is our neighbour Lily. "Scarlett - your mother. She - she was driving to see her parents. She had intent to come back before you got up - but - Scarlett... she died on the way back. I'm sorry." Before she finishes I start screaming. I couldn't contain it. My mother is gone. Forever. My sisters come running to the hallway. "Mum... mum..." That's all I can manage. "She's gone! She's gone! This can't happen!" I scream through violent sobs. I feel like someone was banging a hammer on my head. I run into the bathroom - and is sick. I look at myself in the mirror. I am hot and red as fire. But now I can't see myself anymore. All I can see is pitch black.
