Scarlett wakes up a few hours later - in hospital. She hadn't opened her eyes for a few minutes at home, so Lily took us all here. The doctor says she might have to stay overnight and take a few tablets tomorrow. It must have felt like her heart was being ripped out. It probably felt like that for all of us to be honest, but Scarlett was probably closest to mum. Lily took home and asked if we would rather stay at hers or if she would like to stay at ours. We took a vote, and decided that we'd stay at hers tonight and then at ours. And so we walked to her house just across the road.
As we all walk down her driveway, for the first time, Violet and Rose start skipping down the gravel. Lily has a small, Tudor England cottage sort of house with a (probably fake) thatched roof. She unlocks the door and out wafts a pungent, smokey smell. "Oh my god, I left the bacon on. I'll be right back, girls." She runs into the house and we all look at watch other. We sometimes wonder if Lily is a bit out of it. She comes back outside. "Come in." She gestures to the hallway, and paces back inside and into her room. She doesn't come back out for a long time. Then she calls "Just make yourself some breakfast, use whatever ingredients." Yep. Definitely out of it. Stella jumps to the cupboards, then the fridge, then the pantry, then the stove, all in a blur, making a mystery dish. In about 7 minutes, we were eating omelettes with chocolate chips.
