Music Notes

As I run into my studio I hear Ella practicing one of the songs she'll sing in the recital. The scout for Shinning Stars will be there and it's between me and Ella for the scholarship. Ella is just a singer but, she's good at it. I can sing, it just dosen't grab the audience's attention. For this recital I am dancing, playing the piano, and singing. SS wants someone who can sing so, at the end of the recital to decide Ella and I each sing and whoever gets the most applause wins.

My piano instructor's room is next to Ella's vocal coach so, I can hear every word she sings. Today she's singing Sia's Chandelier. I cringe when she hits the high notes. It sounds so squeaky.

I open the door to Ms. Nessa's room and see she's not there. I set my stuff down and walk over to the piano in the middle of the room. I open it and rehearse one of the songs for the recital, Human by Christina Perri. My fingers dance over the keys and chords and, I find myself singing, "But I'm only human! And I bleed when I fall down, I'm only human, and I crash and I break down. You're words in my head, knives in my heart, you build me and then I fall apart 'cause I'm only human."

"Very good! Your voice is waaaay prettier than Ella's. Are you singing it at the recital?" Ms. Nessa asks.

"Umm... I don't think so..." I reply.

"Well, as your insturtor in the arts of music, you will accompany yourself for this song at the recital." Ms. Nessa says with a flourish.

"You aren't my dance teacher. " I retort.

"Whatever. Anyway, I have the songs that you'll be performing. Ahem, for our duet we will have duel pianos and playing and singing Rather be by Clean Bandit, your dance is to Hideaway by Kieza, your solo against Ella was your choice, and you chose Maria Mena's It Took me by Surprise, and your normal solo, as decided by me, will be Human by Christina Perri."

"Ok." I say.

"That's all I needed you for. The rest of the hour will be you rehearsing for me. " Ms. Nessa says.

"What do you want me to sing/play?"I ask.

"Ummmm..... the chorus for It Took me by surprise."

I sing,"It took me by surprise, the hatred in his eyes...." and spend the next hour rehearsing. When my best friend, Mia walks in I know my lesson is up. I grab my things mutter a goodbye, and run into the hall past Ella who gives me a dirty look, and into my dad's car.

"Good practice?" he asks. I nod.

"Still have dama with Ella?" He asks."It's only because you're a better musician and singer."

"I guess."I murmer. As our car pulls into our driveway I say,"I'm going to bed." I run up the stairs and change into my pink floral pjs, turn off the light and fall asleep before my head hits the pillow.
