Chapter One:
“I’m not jealous!” The words rang in my ears, echoing off my brain. My boyfriend, Felix, couldn’t stand the thought of me being the new guy’s guide. In other words, I get to hang out with the sexy newbie in every class, every day.
“You just wish you were the newbie,” I murmur as I head to the office to meet up with this newbie. Scampering down the hallway, I take a left at the corner and open the door. The secretary glanced up with a scornful glare.
“Yes?” her tone was very sharp and honestly she wasn’t worth my time.
“Miss Collins! Hello!” the principal’s sang out. I always thought he was queer. A boy, who appeared a little too old for high school, stepped out from behind him. “Miss Collins, this is Mr. Trenton. He’s the new student.”
Newbie stepped forward and extended his hand, “It’s nice to meet you.”
I took his hand and shook as a formality, “You too.” When I finally looked up, my gaze caught in his. His eyes were ice-blue with hair the color of a raven’s wing.
“Ready for class?”
“Yeah,” I led him out of the office and upstairs to go to our next class.
“I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name…?” He turned his icy stare onto me: that ice melting as he met my eyes.
“Katrina.”
“Katrina,” he repeated with awe. “What a pretty name.”
“Don’t get your hopes up, okay?”
“I’m trying to be nice, Katrina. I’m normally not nice but since you’re my guide for the rest of the year I thought I’d try to become friends.”
“Nice thinking.” I made sure to keep my sentences short as possible.
“Please, Katrina, help me out here.” Both his eyes and voice were pleading, dying to become my friend: pathetic.
“Look, there’s one person I like talking to. Most others I don’t talk to, so you’re lucky I’m even talking to you.”
“Well sometime I hope you learn that you can trust me.” With that, the two of us dropped into an uneasy silence. Our footsteps sounding off the walls. The silence hanging heavy between us.
“So, um, since we are already fashionably late, do you want to hang out somewhere until the next class…?” My voice sounded weak and stupid even to me. I hoped Newbie didn’t catch that. At my suggestion his eyes lit up, and he nervously ran a hand through his hair.
“Why not, where do you want to go?” He wrapped an arm around my shoulders just before I shrugged it off.
“Paws off, Newbie. Do you like sugary stuff?”
Newbie chuckled at my wording, “Love it. By the way, name’s Max.”
“Ice cream?”
“I’ll pay.”
“Name’s still Newbie to me.” We reached the main door finally and he reached out to open it for me. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” he flashed a crooked grin. Oh my god, his smile is hot! “Hey, mind if we take my car?”
“Yeah, sure.” Taking my arm in his hand, he led me over to his car. I was expecting, like a worn-down old piece of crap, but when we got there, it was a silver Porsche: black leather interior, power steering, everything one could ask for in a car. Had to be at least a hundred grand. “Oh my god! Where did you get this!”
