Samantha throws out her hand to the animal. Its bigger than me, blue foaming from its mouth. It has a fur coat of white and gray, its eyes a deep, snarling yellow.
Samantha puffs as time freezes around us. I look behind me at her, I'm below her, clutched in the safety her arms. Her strange purple eyes are emitting a low light as she struggles to maintain the hold she has on time itself.
She lets go of me and stands slowly, her face turning red.
"I-I can't hold it much longer," she strains to say through clenched teeth.
I don't even know what to say. I just stand and stare.
"We need to go," is all she says as she grabs my arm and pulls me up.
"The Howlights... They used to be wolves... But they've changed," she says slowly as we run through the forest.
"Wait... What? How?" I struggle to understand. I can barley think straight. Ive heard of wolves before... But Howlights?
Samantha ignores my questions.
"I'm not going to hold this much longer," she puffs. "Howlights are fast runners... You wont be able to avoid them. If I slow down, don't worry about me. Just run. You're too important."
And at that, Samantha stops in her tracks and lowers her hand. Color is brought back to the world and time is running again. I can already hear pounding through the forest. I stop too and grab Samantha to run.
She shoves me. "No!" She shouts frantically.
"I- I cant just leave you!" I shout, my heart thumping through my chest.
"Now's not the time to be a hero," she looks deep into my soul, her eyes dim and pleading.
I see a flash of white and grey in the distance.
The sound of heavy paws of fallen leaves.
"Run," she whispers.
And I do.
I run. I run. I run.
I run faster than I ever thought I could, I hear Samantha's shouts and gasps behind me. But I don't stop. I can't stop.
Paw steps sound behind me. Loud panting. Blue drool. Gray and white.
Howlight.
I stop and look behind me. Smears of crimson cover its maul. My head pounds. My tears fall. My anger takes over.
I feel a rush of power come over me as I stare at the Howlight head on. Power pumps through my veins as the blur comes at me. I seethe with an uncontrollable rage that clears my head and comforts my sweating body.
Then, an explosion erupts from my chest, a bolt of electricity rushing through me and escaping to the Howlight. It stops dead in its tracks and collapses to the ground whimpering.
I just paralysed a living, breathing animal without even touching it.
I am powerful.
I am scared.
I am angry.
