My eyes jolt open and its as if I was underwater for a century and have just gotten my first breath of air in years. I gulp and gasp as my head screams and thrashes, confused and destroyed. I feel as though the only thing I can remember is the wicked cries of a newborn child.
I sit up, glaring light in my eyes from the ceiling above me. I'm now in a bed, the mattress tathered and ugly. But that doesn't matter to me now. All I can feel is the screeching ocean in my brain.
I hear people in the room, but I can't focus.
"Who is..."
"New girl..."
"Important..."
"Remember..."
Remember.
Remember.
Remember.
It all comes flooding back to me like whiplash.
I see myself as an infant, crying out in the dark beneath dusty floorboards.
I see myself as a child, being carried by my father in a line to collect food rations.
I see myself in a back of an old truck, crying as my father shouts in the driver seat as we are being shot at by men in black uniforms.
I see myself standing in the woods alone, happy, beautiful.
Then I see myself on my knees, crying out as I kill men with their own bullets, not touching anything but my own temples as a village burns behind me.
My eyes flash open, and my headache dissipates slowly but surely. I shake my head, my red hair splashing my shoulders. I shudder as I finally become aware of my surroundings. I'm lying on top of a messy mattress with a thin white sheet displayed over the top. Next to me is a small table with a stone on top of it. Next to the rock is a little note. I sit up with surprising ease and take the light notebook paper in my hands. I read it to myself.
Nathan's Daughter:
I couldn't stay with you throughout the night so I left this stone here for you. When you keep it in your possession it should have a sort of healing effect that lasts for a few hours. This should allow your wounds to heal overtime, but please be careful still. When your visions are over, step out of the room and tell the very first person you see that you are the daughter of Nathan. They will take you to your father to talk.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. FawlA rock with healing properties? Dr. Fawl... He must have been the old man from before. I take the stone in my hands. Its smooth and plain, just a light gray no bigger than my thumbnail. Nothing really seems to be affected by it, but I keep it nonetheless. I have no idea what to expect anymore.
I stand from the messy bed and feel wobbly on my feet. My hands tremble before me like mad, sick and shaky. I spy a large mirror on the rickety old walls, their off-white paint peeling and dirty. I stand before the mirror that has a small crack in the top right corner, covering up a bit of my face.I stare at myself. I don't look right. My hair is a disaster, thrown in disarray left amd right. The tight and thin white shirt that once hugged my skin has been removed, likely unrepairable due to the Howlight's scratch. Instead I wear a deep green t-shirt with a small v-neck. It's material feels heavy compared to my regular clothing, not to mention that they replaced my light pleated skirt with heavy-duty blue jeans.
I shake my head at my freckled face. Then, I pause. I stare at myself in the mirror. My eyes... They're no longer green... But purple.
How?! How is that possible?
I pinch my arm. I'm tired of being clueless about everything... I just want answers. I decide I have no choice but to do what the note left for me says. I need to get to my father. I need answers.
I push myself towards the old door and open it careful, unsure of what may be on the other side. I exit and discover a hallway. The floor is tile, reminding me of rooms from school. There are no windows from what I can see, and the overhead lights are off. The only way I can see are separate lamps set up around, which I assume are battery operated since they have no cords.
I step out of my room and into the rather wide tile hallway. The first person I see is a boy. I come closer to realize its not just any boy... Its Ethan.
