"Alright students, today we will be watching the 'television show' the Muggles call 'Doctor Who'." Yelled Mrs Finley, silencing the whole class. "Thomas, if you could turn off the lights..."
Thomas stood and went over to the panel on the wall, flipping the nearest switch.
The heavy drapes covering the floor-to-ceiling windows suddenly flew open, letting in blinding rays of sunlight, causing the entire class to be suddenly blinded and several girls to let out frightened screams.
"No Thomas," Mrs Finley screeched, "The middle one! The middle switch!"
Thomas turned the first switched back off, then sheepishly flipped the middle one. The florescent lights overhead turned off and Thomas returned to his seat as the whole class breathed a sigh of relief. Every time someone who hadn't grown up in a Muggle home tried to flip the light switches, something went disastrously wrong. Wizard children just didn't understand their function; to them a spell would be much easier. Numerous times Mrs Finley has had to explain that Muggles didn't have magic or spells, so they needed light switches.
You could hear the information whiz as it passed over the childrens' heads.
Anyway, now that it was dark, Mrs Finley turned on the television. She had practiced doing so last night, and managed to get it on in only two minutes, a record time. She pressed play on the remote and the familiar theme song poured out of the speakers, the Muggleborns and Half-bloods who regularly watch the show singing along enthusiastically. The other children who didn't looked back and forth between the screen with its strange tunnel and their classmates singing to some techno wordless thing like it was the best song in the world.
"Now, this show is about an alien called the Doctor traveling through space and time in his machine called the TARDIS." Mrs Finley said over the music. "The Doctor is incredibly smart, and owns a tool similar to a wand he calls his 'Sonic Screwdriver'. He often chooses human companions to travel with him on his adventures. Many Muggles watch this show regularly and enjoy discussing it with other 'fans'. Fan is a term which means fanatic, which means they love a something to a large extent. Now, we're going to be watching the first episode. I want notes and there may be a quiz."
The wizards groaned loudly at that last sentence, but the Muggle-born children cheered enthusiastically. Most of them were raised watching Doctor Who, so quizzes on it would be a piece of cake. They were really only taking Advanced Muggle Studies to keep up with the Doctor Who episodes, as Hogwarts had no WiFi.
The episode progressed quickly. Mrs Finley had started with first episode of the remake, so Ninth was currently speed walking (furious as always) back to the TARDIS with a questioning Rose tailing him.
The episode ended a half-hour later. Mrs Finley flipped the lights on again and switched the TV off. "Any questions?" She asked. Several hands went up. "Thomas."
"Well, who is Rose? Like, is she his new companion? Or a sidekick? Or his earth friend?"
Mrs Finley honestly had no idea. She had never watched Doctor Who before, so she knew as much as the class. But she couldn't say that, so she improvised. "We will see in the next episode, Thomas." There were two more hands still raised. "Hannah."
"How come if they were in London we don't see them?" Hannah asked in her annoyingly twittery voice. "Wouldn't people notice him walking by? He wouldn't be hard to miss."
"Excellent question Hannah. Now children, listen up, this is important: the show Doctor Who and it's characters and situations are what is called fiction, which means it's made up."
Hannah frowned. "So it's not real?"
"No, not real I'm afraid. Looks that way though, doesn't it?"
A lot of people nodded.
One last hand now. "Jonah."
"Who is he? It's Doctor who?"
Half the class laughed, then all started explaining at once. Jonah was besieged by multiple answers, ranging from "cause he's an alien" to "his name is a secret only he knows and if anyone else finds out it would end life as we know it" which was highly doubtful but plausible.
Poor Jonah.
Mrs Finley looked on as the fans flocked, and she shook her head. This was going to be a long year...
