Yoko had always been a light sleeper.
Yusho knew that, but still, he allowed himself to go to bed before her that night.
His suitcase was already by the door.
You must think that I'm stupid
You must think that I'm a fool
You must think that I'm new to this
But I have seen this all before
Yoko would hate him forever, he knew it. But he was doing this for her, and for Yuya.
Slowly, so as not to wake her, he pushed aside the covers and started to stand up.
"Where are you going, Yusho?"
He froze.
All your life you've never seen
A woman taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven?
Will you ever win?
"Just out for a few minutes," he said, trying to stay calm. "I need some fresh air."
"I'll go with you. I know you don't like walks by yourself.
Yusho shook his head. "I need..... time to think."
"About your duel?"
I am the sand in the bottom half of the hour glass, glass, glass
I try to picture me without you but I can't
"Y-Yeah, about my duel."
She noticed the stutter in his words. "Don't worry, Yusho." Yoko sat up and put her hands on his shoulders, rubbing them tenderly. "I'll support you no matter what happens."
And I still cry out for you
Don't leave me
Don't leave me
Yusho stood and turned to face his wife. She was just as beautiful as she had been the day he married her, but she was stronger now, he knew that for a fact. She'd be able to take care of Yuya while he was away.
"I'm sorry, Yoko," he whispered, reaching for her hand. "I have to go."
"Where?" Yoko asked.
Yusho took a shaky breath. "To another dimension."
Yoko blinked. "Oh," she said, sighing. "I get it. I'm dreaming."
And you're a cherry blossom, you're about to bloom
You look so pretty but you're gone so soon
"No, you're not. Take care of Yuya, alright?" He stroked her cheek tenderly before turning to the closet and pulling out a pair of gloves.
"Another dimension?"
"Please don't tell Yuya," Yusho pleaded, turning back around. "I don't want him to get wrapped up in this too earlier. It's a little hard to explain but..... a very important person asked me to help him take down a powerful man. I need to go." He sat down and kissed Yoko's cheek. "I promise I'll be back."
Yoko sighed and set her hands on his shoulders. "I love you, and I trust you. I won't tell Yuya about any..... interdimensional travel or anything. Just stay safe."
Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
Don't stop, it'll soon be here
Yusho nodded immediately. "I'll come back once my work is done. Hopefully, Yuya will never know. I want him to be safe....." he looked off into the distance, eyes misting over a little. "I don't want to go, but I have to."
"Give me a few hours, please, Yusho," Yoko whispered, tracing a line from his shoulder to his neck.
"Can't say no to the woman of my dreams," Yusho muttered, laying back down and pulling her into a kiss.
Honey honey, how he thrills me, ah-hah, honey honey
honey honey, nearly kills me, ah-hah, honey honey
It was nearly one in the morning when Yusho very lightly pushed a dead-asleep Yoko's head off his chest and got up. He dressed quickly, pulling on his coat and gloves as well. His footfalls were silent as he crept down the hall. Carefully, he pushed open the door to Yuya's room.
The young boy was sound asleep, arms curled around a stuffed hippo. He snored softly, a spit bubble forming on his lips. Yusho chuckled and walked to his son's bedside, wiping the spit away with a tissue and placing a kiss on Yuya's forehead.
"Goodbye for now, Yuya. Keep dueltaining while I'm away, alright?" he whispered, stroking his son's hair. He touched the pendant around the boy's neck and smiled. "I'm always with you, my son."
The stairs creaked as he moved down them but he ignored the noise, picking up his bag and buttoning his coat. He strode out the door and down the street, not looking back.
If he did, he could never leave.
It's sad but it's true
I'm way too good at goodbyes
What did you guys think? I think it turned out pretty well. I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while and I'm so glad I got it done. Comment below if you want that scene that caused a cut in the fanfic ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) lol
