Of course he was. I already knew that.
My heart beat said otherwise.
So, the NPPA agent in front of me didn’t.
And that was what I wanted.
The funny thing about one’s past is that it very rarely stays in the past. Everything that has happened, every word regrettably said…..You carry it through your present and onwards towards your future. After a while it becomes familiar, and there’s simply a dull hum of shame acting as perpetual background noise.
Inducing a shock-like rhythm change in my heartbeat was pertinent in convincing my interrogator that I was truly, unbelievably surprised.
I chipped away at my dirty fingernails before looking the vamp straight in the eyes.
“What are you trying to say?” I asked, leaning forward and placing a mask of indifference on my face.
He rolled his eyes and pulled out a chair from the opposite side of the table. Sitting down, he clasped his hands together in an expression of sternness. “It’s no secret that you and he were romantically involved for over a century. We have witness reports to prove it.”
“I haven’t seen him in four hundred years.” I calmly exclaim. It was more like four years, but who’s counting?
“That may be true, but around the time when you two broke things off, he went into hiding. NPPA has tried to find him ever since, and all we’ve acquired about his whereabouts are a few grainy photographs,” and then he opened his folder up again to retrieve three more pictures. Each one depicted a man walking, wearing sunglasses, and flanked by two other men on each side of his body.
They all seemed to be recent, within the last two years, according to the time stamp and their relative surroundings. “These photos were taken separately, at the time of each murder. The location of Rodriguez corresponds to the city where each woman was killed.”
Shaking my head, the only thing I could see was hastily made conclusions ruled by coincidences. “This could mean anything. Don’t draw connections in places that don’t connect.”
My interrogator smiled a genuine, cocky smile. “So you don’t deny that this is Dominic Rodriguez?”
What game is he playing?
His smile dropped and he was back to business once again. “Don’t get that look on your face. Your subconscious had no qualms that this wasn’t who I said it was. You already knew this was Rodriguez the second you saw him.”
Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes in refrainment. “Yes, he does look familiar. But I’ve met many people in my lifetime. If this was Dominic, and this is a huge if, he wouldn’t be caught in public near the scene of the crime. And, you haven’t shown me any other evidence as to why you believe he is involved with the murder of these women.”
“Do you know who these women are?”
I shook my head.
“They are the Destined’s to three of the Alpha’s in North America. There are only five Alpha’s, including Rodriguez. This could be a power play. A method of ruining organized pack living.”
