Something Unexpected (13)

Shayne POV

It has been about 2 months since Summer Games. Damien and I are sitting in our babies nursery.  I look over to her crib. It has a dark wood structure with a pastel pink sheet in it. Her walls are painted a warm grey, with pictures of cartoon animals hung around. We have a fluffy white carpet, a rocking chair and a bench with toys in it. The changing table is the same dark wood with a pastel pink changing part. I hear Damien's phone ring as he get up. I walk over to her crib and place a hand on the barrier. 

Damien runs into the room. "Shayne, get some stuff together. Brittney's water broke. We need to get her to the hospital." He said, a little flustered. "Okay!" I say also a little flustered. He ran into our room with me close behind. I though some clothes of mine and Damien's into a backpack. He grabbed things for the baby. We had everything. I called Ian as Damien started the car.

 Phone call- S-Shayne I-Ian

S- Hey Ian.

I-Hi SHayne. What's Up?

S-Damien and I won't be at work for a while. Brittney went into labor early.

I-Oh my gosh! Okay I will get everything together at work for you guys.

S- Thanks Ian. I will talk to you later.

I-Bye

S-Bye

Damien drove as fast as he could to Brittney's house. He parked and I ran in to get her. I walked into her room and she through her arms around me. "I thought you guys were never going to come." She said. Then she groaned in pain. "Are you okay?" I asked as she gripped my shoulder. "Yeah... just a contraction." I helped her to the car while Damien grabbed her things. 

I got in the back seat with Brittney while Damien drove. It was about 7 minutes to the hospital. Brittney gripped my hand as she had another contraction. Damien pulled into the hospital. He parked and got our bags as I helped brittney out of the car. We walked in and Brittney sat down next to me. Damien walked up to the counter. "Brittney Haas. She went into an early labor, she is me and my husband surrogate." He said. The receptionist check us in.

The next 2 hours went by in a blurr. We ended up in  a room with a hospital bed, bathroom, a couple of chairs, and a couch built into the wall. I sat down next to Damien and grabbed his hand. He squeezed it tight. Our doctor came in. "It looks like Britney is 3.5 cm dilated. The baby is coming 5 weeks premature and is head down." She said while entering information into the computer. I nodded and so did Damien. "My name is Lilly." She said as she walked out. 

2 hours later

Damien and I were both sitting next to Brittney in chairs. He held her hand as she went through another contraction. Her contractions picked up really fast. Hers were now about 3 minutes apart. Lilly came back in and looked at her dilation. She was dilated at 6 cm. Lilly said "She is moving quite fast through labor. This is a good thing for her." as she entered more information into the computer. It was around 11 p.m at this point. Brittney fell asleep soon after Lilly left. 

Damien and I sat down on the couch. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I snuggled into his side. He took a picture of us together and put it on his Instagram story with the text 'At the hospital, and no one is dead ;)' He showed me it and we both laughed. "God, we are going to be dads." He said as he pressed share. He opened up our group chat and told them they could come by tonight if they wanted. "Yeah, I thought we still had a month to prepare." I joked with some seriousness in my voice. He kissed my forehead. "Everything is going to be fine." He said with his same old goofy smile. "Our daughter might be born like 2 weeks before you." He said, realizing how soon my birthday is. "Yeah, we are both going to be Virgos." I said looking up at him. "And I will be your guys Sagittarius." He said kissing me. 

6 hours later

Damien POV

It was 5am when I woke up to text from Mari and Boze. "Can we come over around 6?" They asked.  "Sure" I responded. Brittney was a wake and Shayne was asleep on my shoulder. "Good morning." I said with a smile. She groaned in response. I quickly but carefully get up, laying Shayne down on the couch. I sit in the chair next to her bed and she grabs my hand. She squeezes it tightly digging her fingernails into my hand.  After she loosened her grip I said "Mari and Boze are coming in about and hour." She smiled widely. "Thank god it is someone other than you." She joked smacking my shoulder. We both laughed. I felt arms wrap around my shoulders, I jerked a little. I heard Shayne laugh. "Goddammit Shayne." I said making them both laugh. Brittney's grip once again tightened on my hand. Shayne rubbed her shoulder. 

Mari and Boze walked in about 45 minutes later. They opened the door and walked in. "Hey.." I said. Boze ran up to me and wrapped her arms around my torso. I hugged her back. Mari hugged Brittney lightly. "Wow guys, thanks for all the love." Shayne said jokingly. We all laughed and both girls hugged him. We all talked for a little until the door opened again. I thought it was a nurse until I heard a Wes giggle. "Wes?" I asked confused. He stepped in with Olivia and Courtney close behind. Courtney and Olivia gave Shayne a big hug and Wes wrapped his arms tightly around me.

 We all talk for a while. Then I remembered something. "The Cats!" I said.  Mari Boze and Olivia had already left. "What's up Damien?" Wes asked. "The cats don't have any food or water. Freya and Zelda." I said looking to Wes and Courtney. The both looked at each other. "We'll go feed them." They said together. I hugged them both and so did Shayne. I handed Wes my spare key. "Thank you." I said as they left. 

LIlly came in an hour later and checked Brittney's dilation. "She is at 10 cm. We can move you to labor and delivery. Then began the birth." She said. I looked to Shayne and said "That would be great, Thank you." I grabbed his hand as we walked next to Brittney while she was rolled to the room. 

Brittney's legs were up on the holders as the doctors came in. We stood next to her. One of my hands Brittney was holding. The other hand was squeezing Shayne's. The doctor told Brittney to push and she did for ten seconds.Then she took a breath and did it again. She had to push 1 more time before the doctors could see the baby's head. "We can see the head. Two more pushes." Dr. Fischbach said. She pushed again and then one more time. Brittney realised my hand and I looked in the same direction as Shayne. I heard a scream and started to cry. I saw our little girl. My eyes were clouded with tears. Shayne cut the umbilical cord and they put her on Brittney's chest. Brittney then delivered the placenta and the baby went off to the nicu. They wanted to make sure she was healthy because she was born early.

Lilly came in after the birth with the baby's footprints on a piece of paper. "What is the beautiful baby's name?" She asked I looked at Shayne and together we said "Astrid Raine Topp." Lilly nodded and printed the name.
