When I saw John Dee, I froze. Hate and anger rolled through me as my past crowded my mind. I will never forget the day that Dee stole my everything, stole the center of my world, stole my sun.

Stole William Shakespeare from me.

Will and I had been together for several years when Dee came in and ruined everything. I remember seeing my mother screaming in pain in one memory, seeing the house in flames in another. As the house burned, Will ran from the scene until he saw me.

I plunged into the memory.

A house. Burning. Burning steadily. A figure, William Shakespeare, running from the burning house. My eyes follow him. I scream.

"WILL!"

He stops running when he sees me. I see his mouth move: Zeri. It is the nickname he gave me I will let no one else use.

I let out a wail of despair and my father rushes over, gathering me in his arms. He sees Will. Anger rips across his face and his aura blazes.

Will dashes away without looking back.

So when I saw Dee, you can imagine that I was beyond angry. No, I was many things: devastated, heartbroken, angry, annoyed, frustrated, fuming, raging, irked, etc. A thousand swears in many languages flitted through my mind, but I was calmed the moment I smelled my father's mint aura.

I closed the book and set it on the desk. My own aura flared silver.

Perhaps I should explain this...

I'm what some call a Changing. Other call me an Atla. Others say I'm Tico. There are many names: Changing, Atla, Tico, Score, Cher, Changer, ChangeAura, Artemis, Apollon, Apollian, etc.

But I've always preferred being called an Atla or Tico or Apollon or Artemis. No, I don't know why it's named after the Greek goddess of the hunt. I will never know.

But the scent of mango filled the air as the silver color bloomed.

My father gave me a look. "Nicole."

I looked at him, then backed off. But I didn't let down my aura.

The smell of sulfur filled the air and I watched, horrified, the exchange between my father and Dee. I hoped my mother could keep Sophie, Josh's twin, safe. Keep her out of this, Mom, I silently pleaded.

Josh appeared as my father was thrown in his direction.

"Stay down," my father hissed.

Then the shop exploded and I blacked out.
