Prologue
"Close your eyes." Dominique instructed, his callused fingers entertwined with mine as he tugged me carefully down a gentle slope. The cobblestone street beneath my feet shifted to the soft, distinctive texture of grass and I couldn't help but wonder where we were.
"You're not abducting me, are you?" I joked as we came to a halt.
"Only if you want me to." He whispered teasingly. "Open your eyes."
There were dark spots obscuring my vision as my eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness that surrounded us like a caccoon. Before me lay a field of tulips in the most flamboyant colours and their light, sweet scent swirled in the air, pulling me in. The field seemed to stretch on for miles, like an illusion and there was no one and nothing around it except us and a worn out warehouse on the left. The tulips were only a small fragment of the meadow, but were the most infinite and significant part to me. They were the thread that held together a tailors dress. A necessity that most often gets overshadowed. This was number five on my to-do list.
"Dom, what the hell?" I exclaimed in awe.
"Well, I was expecting more of something along the lines of thank you, you are the most magnificent human to have walked this earth." Dom replied, smirking.
"This is amazing." I said, a tiny smile creeping onto my face.
"That's more like it." He declared, his dark eyes piercing as he gazed at me intently as if my face was a map that would lead him to nirvana. " I guess you can cross this off your list."
"Not quite yet." I murmured in anticipation as I flung myself into the field of tulips and started doing snow angels or maybe I should call them tulip angels? The sweet scent of them infiltrated my lungs and I inhaled deeply hoping to capture the scent and store it somewhere deep inside me where I could bottle up this sensation of contentment and surreality. I could hear Dominique's laugh, throaty and pure as I pulled him down next to me. We were both laughing and trying to catch our breaths when he reached down and cupped my face in his hands, his thumbs tracing circles on my cheek and his gaze lowered to my lips. I was feeling breathless again except this time a totally different kind from before. This one swallowed me up entirely and the butterflies in my stomach fluttered rapidly, coming to life in a way I never believed possible. I wanted so badly to fill the distance between us and reach for him too, to do what my heart yearned for, but I couldn't. If only things were different.
"Don't." I whispered, as I stood up hastily.
"Why?" Dom's voice was full of frustration, "I know you want this too. What is it? Tell me, Remy."
Only if I could tell him. Only if it were that simple. Maybe I should start this story from the beginning, from where everything started, from the to-do list.
