Chapter Seven

Kae’lynn Rodriguez

 I was helping Michael get ready for his date with Jennifer. They were going to a really formal French restaurant. He was dressed in his tuxedo and shoes, but he was having problem with his hair. I stood on his bed, playing with his curls.

 ‘’You’re going to be fine Michael, just be the gentleman I know you can be. I want y’all to be together, even though I can’t find someone.’’ I said.

 ‘’Oh, I seen you with afro dude in the page of some magazine. Isn’t that your ex, that you broke up with four-going-on-five years ago?’’ He questioned.

 ‘’Yes, that was time. I seen him at the gym Saturday and we went to Chipotle. I missed him, but I’m more likely to be in a friendship with him.’’ I said. There was a knock on the door.

 ‘’Man that’s her. Kae’lynn, can you be a best friend and go get the door. Man, I haven’t been on a date like this in a while.’’ He said. I walked out of the room, to the living room door. I opened it, to see Jennifer standing there.

 ‘’Hey Jennifer. Michael is on his way, he just needed to but some finishing touches on his outfit.’’ I said, smiling.

 ‘’Oh ok.’’ She said, walking inside. Michael walked out of his room, over to Jennifer. He grabbed her right hand, kissing it.

'’You look so beautiful, Jennifer.’’ He complimented. She looked down, blushing. They walked out of the house. I walked over to the living room. My phone vibrated in my shorts. I unlocked it, answering the call.

‘’Hello?’’ I asked, turning on the TV.

‘’Hey best friend!’’ Nala shouted through the phone.

‘’Hey, what’s up?’’ I asked.

‘’I was wondering if I we could hang out?’’ She asked.

‘’I’ll come to your house.’’ I said.

‘’Alright, I’ll have all of our snacks and favorite movies out.’’ She said. I hung up, then walked upstairs. I grabbed my black Victoria’s Secret Pink tote. I threw some clothes into the bag, then walked out of my bedroom. I walked downstairs, grabbing my keys. I walked out of the house,  locking the door behind myself. I walked out to my car, getting into the car.

I put the key into the ignition, pulling off. I haven’t seen Nala in a while, she’s been doing her thang and I understand that. I pulled up to her house, taking the key out of the ignition. I grabbed my bag, walking up the pathway. I knocked on the door, waiting for her to answer. The door opened and I seen my best friend.

‘’I missed you so much!’’ She exclaimed, hugging me tightly. I walked inside, up to her bedroom. Tell me why I seen Jacob, laying on the floor.

‘’We’ve been running into each other a lot.’’ I said, smirking. He got up, hugging me. I sat down on the bed beside Nala.

‘’Are y’all ever gonna be the same?’’ She asked.

‘’Maybe, maybe not.’’ I said, looking over him. I got up, walking over to her little sitting area. I sat down, grabbing my phone from my pocket. I got on Instagram, looking at my feed. I looked at Nala’s latest picture, it was me on my phone. ‘’Aye, Nala you is a stalker.’’ I said.

‘’Everytime I see you and/or Jacob, you both are always on your phones. Didn’t y’all come here to be with ya’ best friend?’’ She asked. I locked my phone, getting onto the bed. Jacob did the same.

‘’We’re off, now what do you wanna do?’’ I asked.

'’Let’s play hide & seek.’’ She said, getting off the bed. She was it first. I crept downstairs, to the kitchen. I hid in a cabinet. I heard footsteps.

‘’Where is she?’’ I heard Jacob’s voice.

‘’I think she would be in the living room.’’ Nala said. I heard her skip away. I got on my phone, looking at Twitter. I got comfortable in here. ‘’Ok! You win! Come on, Kae!’’ Nala shouted. I got out, and they looked at me in surprise.

‘’I didn’t know you were that short.’’ Jacob said. I flicked him off then sat down on the island. ‘’I would, thank you very much.’’ He said, winking.

‘’Shut up, Jacob.’’ I said, rolling my eyes. All of us went back up to her room, laying down in random spots. The first one to fall asleep was Nala. I walked out onto the balcony, looking at the view of LA. I felt eyes on me. I turned to see Jacob.

 ‘’Beautiful isn’t it?’’ He asked, stepping onto the balcony with me.

 ‘’It is, LA is always beautiful at night.’’ I said. I turned to face Jacob.

 ‘’I remember that you use to love and go outside to see the sunset. I would be right there with you.’’ He said.

 ‘’Yeah, I reminisce on those days sometimes in my head.’’ I said. Jacob leaned down and we kissed. I haven’t felt these lips in four years. I pulled away, stunned by what just happened.

 ‘’I want us back.’’ He said, looking down at me.

 ‘’I just can’t see has being more than friends. Our relationship is never coming back. I like hanging out with you and all but I can’t see that happening. I’m so sorry.’’ I said.

 ‘’I understand, but I can’t respect that. I want you, Kae.’’ He said, wrapping his arms around my waist.

 ‘’But I don’t want you, Jacob.’’ I said, backing away. He had that look on his face that he had four years ago.

 ‘’Ok.’’ He said, walking back inside. I walked behind him, grabbing his arm.

 ‘’Jacob, I still love you but I just don’t wanna be heartbroken again.’’ I said. He just snatched his arm away from me, walking out of the room.
