Chapter 6 – Mistake
Laughing Jack
Well shit… I couldn’t believe I did that. Stuck in this damned box again!
I sat in the tight space, looking at all the damage done to the box’s interior. Thirteen years’ worth of it.
I see tally marks, making days that had passed. Messages I had taken time to claw into the box. Trailing my fingers across the deep cuts carved I traced one in particular.
‘He promised’
I grit my teeth and narrow my eyes as a new wave of anger flared through me, I wish I could tear up this box, I hated it so much. All the memories engraved in here infuriated me and I screamed out in anguish but the human just continued to sleep.
She had smirked at me before falling asleep. I stared at her face. It was peaceful, as if a weight had been off of her, she was rigid and stiff while sleeping when I came in earlier. Did she feel a sense of security with me locked up now? Ooh I should have killed her when I had the chance.
I waited, not able to sleep until an alarm next to me went off and shook my box; I tried covering my ears as I growled. It was unbearably loud; the echoing off the walls didn’t very much help the chronic beeping.
The girl awoke and hit a button on the infernal contraption making the annoying noise. She sat up and stretched, looking refreshed and renewed. I hated it.
She looked over at the box and picked me up, tossing me around while in it as she did so. As I slammed into one of the walls she set me down on her lap. I rubbed the back of my head and looked up at her through the box’s walls.
She looked interested, tracing the box’s engraved designs, peeling off the chipping black and white paint on the outside. She eyed the crank and I smirked.
“Yes… yes human be curious! Turn the handle and free me!” I jeered, though she couldn’t hear me.
I knew her curiosity was building and she moved to turn the handle until a voice came through the door, the same that startled me the night before.
“Paris honey! Are you getting ready?” it said in a sing song voice.
“Yes mom! I’m on it.” The girl, dubbed Paris, called back.
She set down my box hurriedly; making me hit the top of the box now. She wasn’t very careful with things now was she? I growled and cursed the ‘mom’ for making her advert her attention. I was so close to freedom!
Who knew when I would get out of my confined space? This was the ultimate punishment! How cruel. With everything I did for her too!
I folded my long raggedy arms over my chest and pouted, burning holes into the wall with my glare. If only looks could kill.
The girl, Paris, came back over to her table where she set me, and I looked up at her.
“What?” I said, as if she could hear me.
She was hesitant but picked me up and put me in her bag of all places! Where the hell were we going at this early hour, why would she take me anyway? As I was jostled around on this bumpy ride I plotted her death, and it would be a million times worse than falling off a tightrope.
~Paris~
I had slept soundly that night; I felt a sense of security knowing that the thing was locked away where he couldn’t get out. If he could, he surely would have done it by now. Looking down at the white and black box I trail a finger over the engraving on it. Swirls and on top letters spelled out ‘Laughing Jack in a Box’. It looked tattered, the paint was chipping off of it, and the wood was really worn out and cracked in some places. Was that menacing clown really in there?
I had almost let my curiosity get the best of me, eyeing the crank I almost had set him free if it wasn’t for my mother, and for that I thanked her. I made a thoughtless decision as I slid the box into my bag and ran downstairs to see mom packing me a lunch.
“Here ya go honey! Now, let’s get going!” she said, chipper and happy.
“Alright.” I sigh and walk out to the truck with her.
Once in there it was a quiet ride, she didn’t turn on the radio, and just as I was about to do so she cleared her throat, I looked up at her.
“What?”
She glanced at me, then back at the road. “I wanted to talk to you about something Araya told me.”
I raise an eyebrow, “What’s what?”
“She phoned the house and I happened to pick it up, she said you’re helping with prom!” my mother practically glowed as she said that.
I sit back and slump in my seat. “Yeah? So what?”
“Honey that’s wonderful! You never contribute to clubs or sports in school, setting up prom is going to be good for you.” She said.
I just groaned as my mother babbled on and on about how good this was, how awesome prom was going to be, how proud she was of me but I just tuned out all of it, occasionally nodding and responding with “yeah”.
She didn’t shut up until we reached the school parking lot. I hurriedly got out of the car, running up to Pope’s class again, ignoring everyone any everything. Knowing after school I’d be dragged to set up for prom.
Araya bounded up to me as I sat on my desk, she looked excited. I raised an eyebrow
“It’s just you, me ---“ Araya mumbled the last part so I couldn’t understand.
“Araya, English. Don’t mumble. What did you say?” I say raising an eyebrow.
“It’s just you, me and Dameon Hendricks.” She whispered his name.
My eyes widen “WHAT THE FUCK?!” I shout.
Mr. Pope didn’t even bat an eyelash from across the room.
“I’m sorry! Principal made me! He’s in detention so this is how he’s serving it.” She said looking down at me, her eyes showed pity.
I growl, gritting my teeth, my nails digging into my legs. Dameon was my ex, and just as bad as the jocks. He fought everyone, his reputation was the ‘bad boy’ of the school. How I got with him one day? I’ll never know. But one thing’s for sure, I wouldn’t mind if Jack killed him.
“I don’t want to anymore.” I growl.
“It’s too late, you can’t back out. Besides, not like he’s going to do anything! He’ll probably ditch.” Araya says.
I just growl, “Yeah whatever.”
I pet my bag without thinking, imagining Jack killing him for me.
