Not that the candles helped with any of the lighting, the room seemed to become darker. Abagail inched towards the candles, drastically waving the smoke around. "If the bishop sees this, he'll blame us for it."
"Does this-does this normally happen?" Sarah asked feeling startled.
Abagail shook her head. "No," she shrugged, looking past the fading smoke.
"Shouldn't we tell someone to relight-"
"Girls, what did I say?"
The bishop's voice caught Sarah off guard, causing her to jump. He quickly walked straight up to them with concern on his face.
"They just went out on their own," Sarah simply told him. Though she shouldn't have felt guilty, she did.
"That's odd," he said quickly, glaring at her. "That never happens. The only way each candle would be unlit if the wind got through, which I can tell you is impossible considering there are no open windows or doors beside this area. That leaves the strong possibility of someone blowing them out," he now stared at me. "Abagail and I know you're new here and I know she-" he gestured his head towards her. "knows better. So, who did it?"
"It wasn't-"
Abagail took my hand and nodded her head. "Please forgive us, but it wasn't us."
There was a pause. "Stay here," he said. The girls stood there, quiet until he returned. The bishop now had another lit candle and handed it, Sarah. "Perhaps you would like to say a prayer."
Upset, Sarah respectfully raised her hand in a declining way. "I don't think that's n-"
"I'm aware you didn't blow out the candles, Sarah," he turned and face the walls. "and I shall take your word if it's so." He faced me. "Is it so?"
"I didn't do it," Sarah replied in almost a whisper.
"Then say a prayer," he said.
"For what?"
"That you two were alone," he said, slowly looking around. "sometimes certain things don't want us doing what is right. Perhaps you should say a prayer and ask God to protect you from the evil around you."
He shoved the candle into her hand then left without word. As she turned back, she noticed for a quick second that the Bishop had looked back at her then looked to his left and right before leaving the room.
"What was that about?" she asked Abagail. Soon after she asked, Abagail began looking around before looking sternly at her friend.
"I'm not sure," she pointed to an empty spot on the floor. "but I suggest you do what the bishop said. He is right you know..."
Already feeling shaken up like she did the wrong thing by entering the cathedral, she gave in, not wanting to cause an argument with Abagail. Sarah whispered a prayer. She asked God to protect the evil around her. However, before she placed her candle down, the fire rose almost towards her face and she dropped it. Abagail let out a scream, pulling Sarah away from the still lit flame on now on the ground. Soon, the fire around Sarah's candle vanished but each other candle that had been blown out before...were relit.
