THE FIRST YEAR consisted of the birth of Lee Felix the day the first droplets began to pour after a Summer's drought had left the city in dire thirst and near hopelessness.
Wrapped in cotton cream blankets, small eyes barely open, the woman smiled as she studied her son for the first time; the sound of rain singing softly against the hospital's blue walls.
"How can the weather be so gloomy, the day our son is born?" her husband asked with a frown. The expression however, was soon replaced with a smile as the baby let out a soft gurgle, curling closer to the warmth of his mother's arms.
"It's not gloomy," the woman stated gently, beaming as she stroked the baby's soft strands of hair - straight just like her own. "It's the first time we've had rain after a Summer of struggle and shortages even for the rich." She lifted the boy so she could see him clearer in the light, smiling as his small frame twisted in her grasp. "He came on the day hope finally returned, the day birds are singing again and the plants drink after a long drought."
Tears of joy rolled down her milky skin the blankets absorbing them where they lightly fell. As if sensing them, the baby gurgled once more grabbing her smooth fingers, tightly grasping them in the comfort of his own. "He's a sign of hope, our hope."
In the bright light of the hospital, the young couple hugged as they cradled their new-born, happiness feeling like an understatement at that very moment.
The day Felix was born was the day clouds of grey covered the entire city, but for once this darkness was rather like a brightness even the sun could not compete against.
The rain arriving meant that in the weeks that followed crops flourished once again, feeding starving mouths and hungry bellies. It reminded the rich of what if felt like to fill swimming pools and farmers what it felt like to hold even a single bank note.
The rain reminded people of different things. Those who barely survived the Summer of 2000 remembered the lack of its presence and the beauty of when it came.
Those born after saw it without meaning, a weather event made to spoil days and waste time.
But even after all these years even a single drop would still cause Changbin to stop for a split second as his memories flooded back to him and he swore, that even though he knew moments faded, he could still feel the warmth just like he did exactly when he had spent time with the other.
Lee Felix.
But even the rain stopped after some time.
