Chapter 8
Samson picked up his walkie -talkie and signaled Kassie and Jake. Within minutes they were by his side
“What is it?” Kassie said catching her breath. She gasped as she saw the backpack “Thats Jason’s!”
“I will bring my guys here tomorrow to search it. Until then everybody stay away from it.” He directed his gaze to Lyric.
“But what if there is more evidence or if Jason is here?” Lyric asked clearly frustrated.
“Then we will find it tomorrow. And if Jason was here in the woods…” He dropped the sentence. They didn’t need him to finish it.
They walked out of the woods and headed separate ways. The Liddells dropped Lyric of at her house, making sure they expressed their thanks. She walked in the house and headed straight for her room. She had thought that discovering more clues would be encouraging, it would mean finding Jason sooner. But it was not encouraging it made her feel worse. She couldn’t help wondering if there were more clues leading to Jason. She was frustrated at Samson for stopping the search. How could he? What if the one clue that revealed it all was right there waiting for them? Lyric as tired as she was, stayed up until 2 am fretting over it. “It wouldn’t hurt to go look would it?” she couldn’t believe that thought had even passed through her mind. She was not the rebellious, adventurous type. In fact she was complete opposite she had often annoyed people at school because of how much of a teacher’s pet she was. But yet the thought kept torturing returning until it was the only thing she could think about. “Would it really hurt? I mean I could go there and back in no more than two hours. It is for Jason I have to do it.” She thought as she quietly climbed out of bed and slipped on her jeans and tee. As she walked down the stairs Samson words came back to her “Everybody stay away from the woods.” He would understand. She concluded.
A half an hour later she was quietly on her way to the woods. She made sure she grabbed her cell phone and a bottle of water. As she neared the woods she prayed for God to keep her safe and help her find what she needed. She walked to the spot where they had found his backpack and knelt near it. Right as she was reaching out to touch it she heard a snap. She jumped up and spun around “It was probably just a deer or something.” she thought kneeling back down. But then she heard it again the sound of leaves crunching and twigs snapping. She was obviously not alone. Not knowing what to do she ducked behind a bush. Then she heard voices. The voices of two men.
“Milo, you are such an idiot!” The first one said “How could you have left evidence! You would think you would have learned by now.”
Lyric caught her breath these were the men who had Jason. Despite the wriggling in her stomach she tried to stay as still and quietly as possible. Every breath she took sounded like a bomb to her.
“I said I was sorry!” The second one said. Lyric guessed this was Milo. “Nobody has found us yet and it has been a month.”
“Yes, but Samson is on our case and word has it she is one of the best detectives around.”
“Well what do we do?”
“What do you think? We find and clear all the evidence before they do.”
Lyric thought through all she had just heard. They were right there the men who took Jason from her. If only there was a way to catch them? Then it came to her, her cell phone! She reached in her backpack to grab it as she did so the shifted and creaked.
“What was that?” Milo said
“I don’t know?” the other man said
Lyric closed her eyes, caught her breath, and prayed. She had to get out of there. But how?
“I think we are being watched.” Milo said with a hint of fear in his voice
“Stay here I will look around.”
Lyric pulled herself up on her knees. Maybe there was a way she could crawl to safety? She focused on a tree and started to make her way to it. She suddenly felt a hand clamp her mouth and a strong arm pin her arms behind her back.
“Hello Lyric.” The man said
Lyric hit her head on a rock as she was knocked to the ground. The world seemed to spin as the pain shot through her head. She looked up into the smiling face of Elijah Jackson.
“I knew you would come sooner or later.”He said. And that was all she heard she heard before everything went dark.
